As we all know by now, the Door County Humane Society appears to have been the victim of fraud perpetrated by a former employee. Sadly, this is not the first time a local charity has been duped by shady individuals. From a child care center to a local church, Door County has learned the hard way that fraud can exist in our small community of nonprofits just as it does among the giant Enrons and WorldComs of the for-profit world.

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit with Marilyn Jensen, president of the Door County Humane Society, and board member Clay Bonin. It was heartening to learn how hard these and other volunteers were working to clean up the mess that had been created. The steps they say their organization is taking to strengthen their internal controls seem very reasonable and appropriate. With the removal of the alleged thief from their staff, and assuming that new internal controls are implemented properly, it's very likely that your contribution to the Humane Society was never safer than it is today.

Yet there is a lesson that the rest of us should take from this fiasco. I've written about it in the past, but it bears repeating today. With the implementation of robust internal controls, volunteer boards and professional staffs of our local charities can significantly reduce the likelihood of fraud in their organization.

Internal controls are a system of processes put in place to ensure the integrity of financial and accounting information. Every good charity will have good internal controls. Good internal controls, in turn, require processes that are written down. As a donor, you should never hesitate to ask a charity for a summary of their significant internal controls.

Another season is now underway! Enjoy all that our beautiful peninsula has to offer!

Free Well-Testing Program Begins on Friday!

The newest Fund of the Door County Community Foundation was launched publicly today and begins with the announcement of a free well-testing program for Door County residents.

Healthy Water Door County (www.HealthyWaterDoorCounty.org), a fund of the Door County Community Foundation, Inc., was created because Door County's unique geography makes our water vulnerable.  "As a peninsula situated on the Niagara Escarpment, our thin soil layer, combined with the vertical and horizontal fracturing common in our bedrock, makes protecting our water a priority," says Coggin Heeringa, a founding member of the Healthy Water Door County Board of Advisors.

"Healthy Water Door County's mission is to protect our community's human, environmental, and economic health by guarding against threats to our water," says Bret Bicoy, President & CEO of the Door County Community Foundation and another member of the Healthy Water Board of Advisors.  "We'll accomplish this by investing in initiatives that research water quality issues, educate policy makers and the community, and mitigate threats to our water."

It is with this mission in mind that Healthy Water is pleased to announce its first major grant.

Healthy Water Door County has awarded a grant to the Environmental Research and Innovation Center at UW Oshkosh to conduct a county-wide well monitoring program during the weekend of June 5 & 6 and June 12 & 13.  This grant should provide free test kits to virtually any Door County property owner or resident who would like one.  Of course, if you choose to purchase a test kit, the money saved will be used to support other water projects in Door County.

The hope is that this program will be the start of a long-term initiative to promote high quality drinking water while providing a convenient way for Door County residents to monitor their well water.

Over both weekends, residents will be able to pick up testing kits and ask questions of the experts on hand from UW Oshkosh.  Water samples may then be brought back to the pick-up sites that same day, the next day, or the following week for analysis.  The well water tests include a bacteria nitrate and arsenic test, funded by Healthy Water Door County.

Test Kits may be picked up and dropped off at the following locations:

Friday, June 5th, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Saturday, June 6th, from 9 a.m. to Noon

Crossroads at Big Creek - 2041 Michigan Street, Sturgeon Bay, WI  54235

Sister Bay Liberty Grove Fire Department North Station - 1487 Highway 42, Ellison Bay, WI 54210

Clay Banks Town Hall - 6098 County Road OO, Sturgeon Bay, WI  54235

Friday, June 12th, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Saturday, June 13th, from 9 a.m. to Noon

Crossroads at Big Creek - 2041 Michigan Street, Sturgeon Bay, WI  54325

Town of Liberty Grove - 11161 Old Stage Road, Sister Bay, WI  54234

Clay Banks Town Hall - 6098 County Road OO, Sturgeon Bay, WI  54235

For more information about well testing, contact Caitlin Koller of the Environmental Research and Innovation Center at UW Oshkosh at (920) 424-0763, or email kollerc@uwosh.edu.

Public Registration Opens Monday for the Celebrate Women! Lunchen
The public is invited to register for the 6th Annual Celebrate Women! Luncheon
starting on Monday, June 8th!

Public registration for the 6th annual Celebrate Women! Luncheon opens on Monday, June 8th. Visit the Women's Fund website on Monday to reserve your seat at this year's event.

This year's Celebrate Women! will be held on August 12, 2015 at Stone Harbor Resort in Sturgeon Bay. Check-in for the luncheon will begin at 11:00 am, with the luncheon and program starting at 11:30.  We are very excited to be presenting the terrific inspirational speaker and author, Liz Murray.

Liz has quite a story to tell - a story so powerful it was made into a movie, Liz shares her fascinating, inspirational story of growing up with two drug addicted parents who she began supporting at age 10. Homeless at age 15, the death of her mother was the wake- up call that made her break-free of her circumstances and pursue a different path for her life. While living on the streets of New York, she completed and graduated from high school in just two years. Overcoming horrible odds, she won a full scholarship and was accepted to Harvard University.

Murray offers one of the most moving, elegant and uplifting tales you will ever hear.  The subject of Lifetime Television's Emmy-nominated original film, Homeless to Harvard, Murray completed her degree at Harvard in 2009. Her memoir, Breaking Night: A Memoir of Forgiveness, Survival, and My Journey from Homeless to Harvard (2010), was an instant success making the New York Times' best-seller list the first week of release. Murray is passionate about speaking on the importance of personal motivation, transforming problems into opportunities, and what it takes to make a difference in people's lives.

This annual fundraiser is very important to the Women's Fund as we continue in our effort to support the women and girls of Door County. Please join us for what is sure to be a very special day!

Please consider incorporating gift to this endowment in your estate plans. Speak with your attorney, accountant or other estate planning professional. Or contact the Community Foundation and we'd be glad to help facilitate your generosity.

Many charities entrust the administration of their endowment funds to the Community Foundation. It's a safe and responsible way to manage endowed gifts, long-term assets or operational reserves.

The non-profit community also counts on the Community Foundation's planned giving expertise to facilitate gifts into their endowments. By aggregating these assets under the umbrella of the Community Foundation, economies of scale allow for a far more diversified investment portfolio and lower investment fees than any of the charities could achieve on their own.

The Door County Community Foundation is a catalyst, building and strengthening community by convening groups of people and organizations that want to make a difference in our world. We make it possible for a wide range of donors to meet present and future needs by creating charitable funds without incurring the costs of starting and administering a private foundation. The Door County Community Foundation was founded in 1999 and is governed by a local volunteer Board of Directors.
