In last month's column, "A Tectonic Shift in the World of Philanthropy," I wrote there's a "tectonic shift occurring that has the potential to fundamentally change the world of philanthropy." I noted that many funders are beginning to see the limitations inherent in Strategic Philanthropy, the dominant concept in awarding grants the last few decades.

Strategic Philanthropy involves turning a successful pilot project into a model which is then "scaled up" or replicated in other places expecting the same result everywhere. Strategic Philanthropy believes that if subsequent projects are faithful to the model of the pilot project, success is generally assured.

As I explained last month, while Strategic Philanthropy has proven to work well for both simple and complicated problems, it fails when complex systems are involved. In their paper "Strategic Philanthropy for a Complex World" which appeared in the Stanford University Social Innovation Review, John Kania, Mark Kramer and Patty Russell write, "The core elements of Strategic Philanthropy are still useful: Having clear goals, thorough research, a hypothesis for how to approach the problem, and a way of learning from results all increase the odds of success. But the idea that a foundation can intervene in a complex system on the basis of a simplified logic model and reliably expect to achieve its intended outcome creates a false hope that misdirects strategy development and execution."

Non-Profit Education Series:  Board Relations & Insurance Coverage

Hear stories and lessons of working with boards of directors from a career spent managing non-profits. Then receive practical advice on meeting the insurance needs of your charity. These are the two topics to be covered in the next session in the Non-Profit Education Series on Wednesday, May 6th. The series is sponsored by the Door County Community Foundation, the Raibrook Foundation, and the United Way of Door County.

"Lessons from a Career in Non-Profit Management" with Tom Martin

"Is Your Organization Covered?" with Claire Flitcroft and Lynda Stickler

Wednesday, May 6th

8:00 a.m. - Breakfast and Welcoming

8:30 a.m. - Program Begins

11:45 a.m. - Adjourn
The Lodge at Leathem Smith

The first part of the session, "Lessons from a Career in Non-Profit Management," will be an interactive discussion led by Tom Martin. For nearly 28 years, Tom was the President & CEO of Family Services of Northeast Wisconsin, a multi-service social services agency with an annual budget of more than $14 million. He also served as President & CEO of Boys & Girls Home and Family Service in Iowa for 12 years, worked as Director of the Woodfield Center in South Dakota, and began his career by holding positions such as Juvenile Court Liaison, Protective Services Worker, and Foster Care Coordinator with the South Dakota Department of Social Services.

Tom will share the lessons and stories from his long career working with boards of directors and leading non-profit organizations. This will be more of a dialogue than a lecture so come prepared with questions and topics you'd like to discuss.

The second part of the session, "Is Your Organization Covered?," will help you better understand the liabilities and insurance coverage you need to keep your agency protected. Claire Flitcroft and Lynda Stickler will help you navigate the coverage you have and reveal some that maybe you should have.

As always, the Non-Profit Education Series is free to the staff of local charities, their volunteers, and members of their boards of directors. However, please register in advance by sending an email to Julie@raibrookfoundation.com.

Peninsula Preschool and St. Peter's Lutheran Church Receive Grants

The Door County Community Foundation recently awarded the Peninsula Preschool, Inc. a Sustainability Grant from the Children & Youth Fund and the Martha Cherry Fund. This grant will provide financial assistance making student tuition more affordable for low income families.

The Peninsula Preschool is a licensed early childhood education center focusing on Pre-Kindergarten education for 3-5 year olds in Northern Door County.  A community supported program for over thirty years, the Preschool provides a constructive learning environment that encourages positive self-esteem for young children and prepares these students for their future educational experiences.

"So many children benefit from the Peninsula Preschool experience, the dedicated teachers, and all of the volunteers.  This grant will help to extend the reach of the Preschool's quality educational programming to more families as they continue to provide an engaging and healthy environment for learning," said Dave Eliot, board chairman of the Door County Community Foundation.

The purpose of Peninsula Preschool is to provide a warm, inviting, and well-equipped setting where children are free and safe to play and learn.  The program is planned to stimulate intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth.  The Preschool provides a healthy space for children to think independently, pursue their natural curiosities, and strive toward their own potential.

The Peninsula Preschool experience provides an opportunity for each child to see themselves as important and conscientious members of a community.  Through the programming, children can find their strengths, and feel capable and comfortable facing their challenges.  The environment promotes positive attitudes and problem solving.

The Door County Community Foundation also recently awarded St. Peter's Lutheran Church a Sustainability Grant from the Health and Human Needs Fund.  This grant provides St. Peter's with the financial assistance to offer an English Language Learners (ELL) class to meet the needs of local immigrants interested in gaining basic proficiency using the English language.

Over the last 30 years, the immigrant population of Door County has more than tripled. It is estimated that there are 300 immigrants, just in the Southern Door area alone, with family members tending to have year-round jobs at the large dairy farms.

"St. Peter's has a long history of providing programming to meet the unique needs of the Southern Door community.  From communicating with schools regarding a child's educational needs to having the ability to provide information during emergency situations, a basic working knowledge of the English language is a fundamental skill and a vital need for our immigrant families," said Polly Alberts, board vice chair of the Door County Community Foundation.

St. Peter's Lutheran Church has been providing support and services to the Forestville community for well over 100 years. The ELL program is being facilitated by a certified instructor and is held at the St. Peter's site.

For more information regarding the English Language Learners classes at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, please call (920) 365-2218 or visit www.saintpetersforestville.org.

2015 Guide to Endowments Now Available in Door County Living

The Door County Community Foundation's 2015 Guide to Endowments is now available on racks and newstands all across Door County. This year it has been incorporated into nearly 40,000 copies of the 2015 Philanthropy Issue of Door County Living.

The mission of the Door County Community Foundation is to inspire people to give back to sustain and advance the community we love. We do that by serving as a conduit for giving. We're a charity whose purpose is to make giving simpler, easier, and more tax efficient so you can be as generous as possible to the charities and causes you care about.

The Community Foundation has published the Guide to Endowments as a resource to help you with your giving.

The Guide will also be mailed this Spring to estate planning professionals across the entire State of Wisconsin.

Endowments in Action: Door County Library Foundation
The Community Foundation is honored to administer the Door County Library Foundation Fund.

Door County Library provides materials in a variety of media that record human knowledge, ideas and culture, then organizes these for ready access.  It offers guidance and encouragement in their use for all County residents and visitors.  Services include books, magazines, online databases, music and film that is lent from the eight library sites in Forestville, Sturgeon Bay, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Baileys Harbor, Ephraim, Sister Bay/Liberty Grove and Washington Island.

Public access computers are available at all locations and wireless computer access can be found in and around all of the libraries.  These services are critical for job applications, tax filing and as knowledge sources.  More and more government and employment information is available only online.  The online databases provide access to national newspapers and our local Peninsula Pulse and Door County Advocate.  Informational programs for adults and youth to foster learning and reading are held year round.

Please consider incorporating gift to this endowment in your estate plans. Speak with your attorney, accountant or other estate planning professional. Or contact the Community Foundation and we'd be glad to help facilitate your generosity.

Many charities entrust the administration of their endowment funds to the Community Foundation. It's a safe and responsible way to manage endowed gifts, long-term assets or operational reserves.

The non-profit community also counts on the Community Foundation's planned giving expertise to facilitate gifts into their endowments. By aggregating these assets under the umbrella of the Community Foundation, economies of scale allow for a far more diversified investment portfolio and lower investment fees than any of the charities could achieve on their own.

The Door County Community Foundation is a catalyst, building and strengthening community by convening groups of people and organizations that want to make a difference in our world. We make it possible for a wide range of donors to meet present and future needs by creating charitable funds without incurring the costs of starting and administering a private foundation. The Door County Community Foundation was founded in 1999 and is governed by a local volunteer Board of Directors.
