Saturday, January 24th:  Opening Reception for Winter Exhibition

The community is invited to attend a reception on Saturday, January 24 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Door County Community Foundation to open the Winter Exhibition featuring works by artists Liz Maltman and Rick Risch.

A Fish Creek resident for many years, Liz Maltman began painting about 10 years ago when she discovered "plein air" painting. Working mostly in pastel or oil, Maltman's landscapes are nearly all created "en plein air". The constantly changing light and atmosphere, as well as the often adverse weather conditions are challenges she enjoys. An "outdoors" person by nature and a silent sports enthusiast, Liz finds plein air painting well suits her lifestyle. While plein air painting of landscapes has been around for over 200 years, Liz's work would not be considered traditional. Her bright and innovative use of color and pattern in the work, as well as a non-traditional use of medium, suggests more of a "21st century" approach to landscape and plein air painting.

The Peninsula School of Art in Fish Creek has invited Liz to participate in the 2015 Door County Plein Air Festival to be held in July 2015. The annual event features 40 nationally recognized plein air painters from all over the United States and Canada. Liz is honored to compete in her seventh festival. Liz will also be teaching a beginner's class in plein air painting at the art school in late August.

During the season, Liz's work can be seen at the Cookery Restaurant in Fish Creek or year-round by appointment at Marisch Art, also in Fish Creek.

Self taught, Rick Risch has had his hands in drawing, painting with oil, watercolor and pastel, ceramics and mosaic design, and stained glass. Rick lives with his partner Liz Maltman in Fish Creek. He has also lived in Gills Rock and Sturgeon Bay. The Door County landscape is in many of his paintings and stained glass windows.

Rick also is interested in working with portraits which is the main body of work being shown at this exhibit. Included are portrait subjects from the controversial Edward Snowden to a painting of the little known 1930's Cuban artist Fidelio Ponce de Leon. Rick will also be showing two comical statues of a mother and son that are mice made out of wire, plaster, concrete and glass.

Rick was born in Pipestone, Minnesota. In addition to Wisconsin, he has also lived in South Dakota, New Jersey, and Georgia. He has shown his art in galleries, exhibits and businesses in Door County since 1991.  Rick served on the Peninsula Arts Association board for 6 years and continues to be an active citizen in promoting art education and exploration of the arts for all ages.

Liz & Rick show their work in select invitational and juried shows both locally and regionally throughout the year and can be seen at
lizandrick.com. They are pleased to show some of their work at the Door Community Foundation offices this winter.

Refreshments will be served by Morag Hornsby and her team at
Serves You Right Catering. No RSVP is necessary.

Each quarter, different Door County artists will be invited to exhibit their work. The Gallery is normally open to the public during the Community Foundation's regular hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Wednesday, February 4th:  Non-Profit Education Series

Lean Six Sigma: Non-Profit Leadership in the Trenches is the topic for the latest in the free Non-Profit Education Series sponsored by the Door County Community Foundation, the Raibrook Foundation, and the United Way of Door County.

This session is on Wednesday, February 4th at the Lodge at Leathem Smith (1640 Memorial Drive in Sturgeon Bay). Check in and breakfast start at 8 a.m. and the session runs from 8:30 a.m. to Noon.  Register by email to juile@raibrookfoundation.com or call (920) 746-2995 x102.

Lean Six Sigma: Non-Profit Leadership in the Trenches will be led by Kinga N. Jacobson, a Master Black Belt in Lean Six Sigma, a highly regarded quality management business practice. She is an accomplished business consultant with extensive experience in management and coaching. Jacobson is also a published author and a frequent public speaker and training facilitator in process of earning her doctoral credential.

Juggling responsibilities? Prioritizing funds usage? Managing volunteers? Handling money? Streamlining operations? Safeguarding reputation? If any of this sounds familiar, this session is for you. Basic six sigma tools of defining, measuring, analyzing, improving, and controlling your non-profit's operations can make a huge difference in your organization's effectiveness and outcomes.

"We've incorporated these quality management practices into the Community Foundation and that has allowed us to operate with remarkable efficiency," say Bret Bicoy, President & CEO of the Door County Community Foundation and a graduate of Motorola University's Six Sigma Methodology program. "We have minimal administrative staff and yet are able to maintain a remarkably low error rate with our financial transactions."

During this session, attendees will work through methods such as Voice of the Customer, Critical to Quality, Process Mapping, SIPOC, Fish Bone Diagram, Benchmarking, Five Whys, and Quality Cycles to help you pinpoint non-value added time and hidden factory while capitalizing on industry best practices for strategizing priorities, improving communications, and streamlining operations.

"These business practices are just as valuable to the non-profit community as they are to the for-profit world," says Bicoy.

Lean Six Sigma: Non-Profit Leadership in the Trenches will leave you with ready-to-implement solutions for reduced overhead and smoother processes, allowing you to focus on accomplishing your core organizational mission.

Lean Six Sigma: Non-Profit Leadership in the Trenches is on Wednesday, February 4th at the Lodge at Leathem Smith. Check in and breakfast start at 8 a.m. and the session runs from 8:30 a.m. to Noon.  Please register in advance by email to juile@raibrookfoundation.com or call (920) 746-2995 x102.

Thursday, March 5th:  Women's Fund  Presents "Tales of Our Lives"

Please join the Women's Fund on Thursday, March 5th for an evening of "Tales of Our Lives" - A Story Slam: Empowerment Through Performance.

A Story Slam is more than just a storytelling event. It's an invitation for people to share a few minutes of themselves in a room full of people who appreciate a well-told tale. These aren't stories for children, but rather an honest description of real life events and how they made us into the people we are. The stories can range from the funny to the sad. From heartwarming to heart wrenching. But they are all authentic gifts from the story tellers as they share a bit about themselves with all of us.

We'll hear stories from 8 inspiring individuals with musical breaks featuring Dorothy Scott and Jess Holland. Follow us on Facebook for the latest information.

Tales of Our Lives is on Thursday, March 5th at the Door County Fire Company in downtown Sturgeon Bay. Social hour starts at 6:00 p.m. and the stories will be told from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Both men and women are encouraged to attend.

Tickets go on sale on the Women's Fund website on February 10th. Advance tickets are $15. Tickets at the door will be $20 - as space is available. Based on last year's attendance, we expect to be sold out so get your tickets early.

The Door County Community Foundation is a catalyst, building and strengthening community by convening groups of people and organizations that want to make a difference in our world. We make it possible for a wide range of donors to meet present and future needs by creating charitable funds without incurring the costs of starting and administering a private foundation. The Door County Community Foundation was founded in 1999 and is governed by a local volunteer Board of Directors.
