There are few things I disdain more in my professional life than fundraising gimmicks. Charities should do good work then share the impact of their efforts with their donors. That's how you build a strong and enduring donor base.

So imagine my surprise when my wife and I agreed to get all wet as a part of the Ice Bucket Challenge.

For those few who haven't heard, the Ice Bucket Challenge began earlier this year as a dare between friends. You either dumped a bucket of ice cold water over your head or made a donation to a charity of your choosing. Like many folks across the nation, several months ago members of my very large family in Hawaii began accepting the challenge and posted videos to Facebook of them getting all wet. In my family, the preferred cause was breast cancer as it is an issue which has touched several of our relatives.

Frankly, I hated the whole concept when I saw the first videos. The original Ice Bucket Challenge treated charitable giving as a punishment for not accepting the challenge. It was almost as if you had to decide which was worse - getting soaked with freezing water or making a charitable gift.

Thankfully I wasn't the only person uncomfortable with the idea of this choice between giving or getting wet. As it began spreading throughout social media, the challenge transformed into one of both giving and getting wet.

Sustainability Grants Recently Presented to Local Charities

The Door County Community Foundation recently awarded the Birch Creek Music Performance Center, Inc. a Sustainability Grant from the Arts Fund to support their pilot program, Birch Creek Presents the Janice Borla Vocal Jazz Camp and Concert Series. Through the addition of this new vocal jazz camp and accompanying evening concert series, Birch Creek is reaching new students, faculty and concert going audiences while maintaining their popular instrumental summer sessions.

The Janice Borla vocal jazz camp works with solo jazz vocalists and employs techniques both with and without lyrics. One of the benefits of this new program is that the student age base includes adults.

"Congratulations to Birch Creek on developing this partnership with the Janice Borla Vocal Jazz Camp.   The addition of this new program perfectly complements the quality summer sessions and concerts for which Birch Creek is known," said Arvid Munson, board member of the Door County Community Foundation.

J
anice Borla is a recognized pioneer in vocal jazz education. She established the vocal jazz program at the Saskatchewan School of the Arts in Canada and is currently director of vocal jazz at North Central College in Naperville, IL. Borla is an acclaimed recording artist with multiple CDs to her name. You can hear Janice Borla and her rhythm section perform at the Birch Creek benefit concert on Saturday, October 4 in Juniper Hall on the Birch Creek campus.

For concert and future educational program information, please visit Birch Creek Music Performance Center, Inc. online or call (920) 868-3763

The Door County Community Foundation also recently awarded the Door County Master Gardener Association a Sustainability Grant from the Children & Youth Fund to support the Youth Spring Planting Program. This hands-on learning program introduces third and fourth grade students to the importance of homegrown produce. Ancient and current techniques for creating home vegetable gardens are explored resulting in a lifelong appreciation and enthusiasm for working the soil.

Frank Maxwell, board member of the Door County Community Foundation commented, "The success of the Master Gardener's Youth Program is truly a collaborative effort through which our students reap tremendous benefit. The experience of growing produce and learning about environmental sustainability gives them the foundation to make healthy decisions for the rest of their lives."

Six 20 x 20 foot garden beds in The Garden Next Door are dedicated to the Youth Program and are maintained during the growing season by Master Gardener Volunteers. Twenty dedicated Master Gardener volunteers supervise the students and teach the hands-on portions of the program. The staffs from the Peninsular Agricultural Research Station and the International Potato Gene Bank also assist with the educational stations.

Youth Mini-Grants Deadlines Announced for 2014-2015

The Door County Service Club Coalition's Youth Mini-Grant programs are now accepting applications for the 2014-2015 school year. These youth focused grants are relatively easy to obtain with a simple handwritten application and short presentation to the review committee. The most important criteria is that the young people are involved in the planning and presentation of the idea.

Youth as Resources Grants provide financial support to projects in which youth use their skills, talents and abilities to serve or educate others. Grants average $200 with a maximum of $500, although exceptional projects may qualify for higher levels of funding. Any youth group comprised primarily of residents of Door County, be it organized or informal, may apply.

Youth in Theatre Grants provide financial support to Door County theatrical productions in which youth play a significant role in its production and/or on-stage performance (including school plays). The maximum grant is $500. Any charitable, educational, civic or youth group comprised primarily of residents of Door County be it organized or informal, may apply.

As a part of the review process, at least one youth representative from your group is required to present your project idea. The Youth Presentation should not exceed 5 minutes and will be followed by questions. High school age students are expected to make their presentation without any assistance from an adult. Middle school age children may be prompted and assisted by an adult. Elementary school age children should be available to answer questions, but an adult may make the presentation.

Deadlines during the upcoming school year are December 3, March 2, and May 1.

Endowments in Action:  Boys & Girls Club of Door County
The Community Foundation is honored to administer the Boys & Girls Club of Door County Facilities Fund.

A lot of people know Door County as vacation land.  While that is true, there is also a lot of working people whose hard work year round helps make Door County the beautiful place that it is. Many of these working people have families and an increasing number of them rely on the services such those offered by the Boys & Girls Club of Door County.

As the old saying goes, "it takes a community to raise a child."  An increasing number of children are at home with no adult care or supervision. Young people need to know that there is a place to go during these times. The Boys & Girls Club of Door County offers that and more. Club programs and services promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence.

Please consider incorporating gift to this endowment in your estate plans. Speak with your attorney, accountant or other estate planning professional. Or contact the Community Foundation and we'd be glad to help facilitate your generosity.

M
any charities entrust the administration of their endowment funds to the Community Foundation.
It's a safe and responsible way to manage endowed gifts, long-term assets or operational reserves.

The non-profit community also counts on the Community Foundation's planned giving expertise to facilitate gifts into their endowments. By aggregating these assets under the umbrella of the Community Foundation, economies of scale allow for a far more diversified investment portfolio and lower investment fees than any of the charities could achieve on their own.
