Of all the federal holidays throughout the year, I enjoy the Fourth of July most of all.

At Christmas we're expected to go shopping and buy things for each other. Thanksgiving has become nine hours of football, combined with a huge meal, then followed by a week's worth of turkey sandwiches. Sadly too many have forgotten that Memorial Day and Veterans Day are not meant to be a time of play, but rather solemn occasions for thoughtful remembrance.

Then there are the days meant to remember prominent historical figures such as George Washington, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Christopher Columbus. While these great men are rightfully honored, those holidays are about celebrating them and what they did for our country. Those holidays are not about us.

But Independence Day is unique. Distilled to its essence, the Fourth of July is a celebration of our community. It celebrates a commitment we made more than 200 years ago and still binds us together today, that we have come together as a community of people to build a society that is more important than any one of us.

Women's Fund to Host Panel Discussion on Aging
This year marks the 5th Anniversary of the Women's Fund Celebrate Women! Luncheon. Patricia Moore, an internationally renowned gerontologist and designer, will be the keynote speaker at the Celebrate Women! Luncheon on Wednesday, August 13th at Stone Harbor Resort.

Moore's address "AGEing By Design: Living & Loving Growing Older," will touch on her exceptional and daring experiment, traveling throughout the United States and Canada disguised as women more than eighty years of age. With her body altered to simulate the normal sensory changes associated with aging, she was able to respond to people, products, and environments as an elder.

Since 1990, Moore has designed more than 200 Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Environments for acute and sub-acute healthcare facilities throughout North America, Europe and Japan. ABC World News featured Moore as one of 50 Americans Defining the New Millennium.

The Luncheon is sold out for the 5th year in a row, but a special panel discussion on aging in Door County will occur prior to the luncheon. Panelists will discuss the issues impacting aging in Door County and identify potential solutions to address those issues. Panelists include Susan Johnson from Ministry Door County Health; Dr. Paul Maes from Aurora Health Care; Michelle Notz, Scandia; and Judy Dobbins from the Senior Center. The panel will begin at 10:15 am at Stone Harbor Resort. Doors open at 10 am and there is no cost to attend.

Sustainability Grants Recently Presented to Local Charities

The Community Foundation's Sustainability Grants are reviewed on a quarterly basis, but checks are presented every week to charities around Door County. Here are some recent grantees.

The Community Clinic of Door County was awarded a Sustainability Grant from the Community Foundation's Health and Human Needs Fund to provide assistance to clinic patients with expenses related to lab testing and medication costs.

The Community Clinic of Door County is a charitable organization that is volunteer-based and donor-driven. The clinic relies exclusively on the generosity of their professional volunteer medical staff, donors, and community partners to provide affordable quality health care to those in our community who are uninsured or under-insured.

"We are so fortunate to have a local clinic that can provide these essential health care services to Door County residents who may not otherwise have access to care," said John Herlache, a member of the Community Foundation's Board of Directors.

The Community Foundation also awarded the Door County Historical Society grants from the Historic Preservation Fund and the Clifford & Clara Herlache Heritage Foundation to support the Hanson House Restoration project. The log house was built around 1856 and the Society is in the process of restoring it to how it would've looked in the time period between 1875-1885.

Restoration experts have determined that there are only 3 similar examples of this type of construction that have been uncovered in the entire United States. When the restoration is complete, the Society's goal is to earn a state and national historic designation for this project.

Marcia Smith, another member of the Community Foundation's Board of Directors said, "This grant will help the Door County Historical Society restore interior work that is needed to preserve this uniquely historic building, allowing visitors of all ages to learn about the Norwegian culture and lifestyle of these early settlers."

A Sustainability Grant was also awarded the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeastern Wisconsin from the Children and Youth Fund to support Youth Mentoring programs in Door County.

Big Brothers Big Sisters programs match volunteer mentors with area youth. This youth mentoring program addresses identified needs in Door County by helping youth overcome cycles of poverty, make healthy decisions and increase self sufficiency. The evidence is well documented that these one-to-one relationships cultivate life changing experiences for youth, forever changing their lives for the better.

"The young people in Door County are our future community leaders, professionals, volunteers and mentors. The Community Foundation is privileged to support this program that matches positive adult role models with our local youth to encourage healthy behaviors and decision making," said Community Foundation Board member John Herlache.

These are just a few of the recent Sustainability Grants awarded by the Community Foundation. Visit us online for more information about the Sustainability Grants program. If you'd like more information about how you can incorporate a gift to the Door County community through your estate plans, please do not hesitate to contact us or just call (920) 746-1786. Endowments in Action:  American Folklore Theatre
The Community Foundation is honored to administer the American Folklore Theatre Fund.

The mission of American Folklore Theatre is to create, develop, and present professional musical and dramatic productions which will further the knowledge and appreciation of the culture and heritage of the United States. AFT is the only major professional theatre company in the United States that solely American Folklore Theatre creates and produces original musicals. AFT has created over 40 shows that have been seen by hundreds of thousands at its pine-rimmed summer theatre under the stars in Peninsula State Park, its fall venues in historic Door County town halls, and elsewhere. Musicals by AFT writers have been produced by companies across the United States and internationally.

The Theatre is dedicated to maintaining standards of artistic excellence; celebrating and illuminating the human condition; reaching a large audience of all ages, including families; and fostering a humanistic work environment with adequate and appropriate emotional, financial and creative support for all those associated with us.

Please consider incorporating gift to this endowment in your estate plans. Speak with your attorney, accountant or other estate planning professional. Or contact the Community Foundation and we'd be glad to help facilitate your generosity.

Many charities entrust the administration of their endowment funds to the Community Foundation. It's a safe and responsible way to manage endowed gifts, long-term assets or operational reserves.

The non-profit community also counts on the Community Foundation's planned giving expertise to facilitate gifts into their endowments. By aggregating these assets under the umbrella of the Community Foundation, economies of scale allow for a far more diversified investment portfolio and lower investment fees than any of the charities could achieve on their own.
