Recently the Volunteer Center of Door County hosted its annual Golden Heart Awards to recognize outstanding volunteers in our community. Holly Feldman, one of the handful of folks who have attended all 12 of these annual galas, calls it the "feel good event of Door County."

Indeed, it's easy to see why people are so energized by the Golden Heart Awards. More than 300 guests gather to hear inspirational stories of volunteers who so generously give of their labor and leadership to our beloved Door County. The collective magnitude of the volunteerism represented by the honorees is simply overwhelming.

It certainly is right and appropriate that we honor these good folks for all they have given. Yet as so often happens, my mind starts to wander off in a different direction. I couldn't help but think about bargain sales.

Now I'm not talking about the bargain sales you find on the racks in the back of a department store. I'm referring to the charitable giving tool called a bargain sale. In essence, a bargain sale is when a donor sells an appreciated piece of property to a nonprofit organization at a price far below the appraised value.

Imagine that you own some real estate that is worth $80,000 and you want to make a charitable gift, but you can't afford to give away the entire $80,000. Instead, you arrange a bargain sale in which you sell the property to a charity for let's say $45,000 - keeping that money as income for yourself. But because you sold it to a charity for $35,000 less than the actual value of the real estate, you've essentially made a charitable gift of $35,000.

My goodness it's getting busy. The season has begun!

Door County COIN Micro-Loan and Business Mentoring Program

The Door County Community Foundation recently held a press conference to announce the launch of Door County COIN - the Community Opportunity Investment Network.

COIN is an innovative effort that is using private philanthropic dollars to create a Micro-Loan Pool that will lend to entrepreneurs, stimulating economic activity and ultimately creating jobs. COIN also offers a Business Mentoring Program that taps into the experience of Door County's retired business leaders to help new entrepreneurs succeed. It's based on a concept originally suggested by David Eliot (pictured), Vice-Chairman of the Community Foundation's Board of Directors.

"We need to make investments in human service programming, but the simple truth is that a stable, year-round job with decent pay and benefits is far more effective at changing lives than any human service program that we could create," says Bret Bicoy, President & CEO of the Door County Community Foundation. "That's what COIN is designed to accomplish - to encourage entrepreneurs to build their businesses in Door County."

The Door County Community Foundation has partnered with the Door County Economic Development Corporation to create COIN. It is anticipated that the typical loan will be about $20,000. Every borrower will be matched with an experienced volunteer business mentor to help make their company successful.

"There are lots of micro-loan programs in Wisconsin, but this one is on the cutting edge and will serve as a model for other communities in our state," says Bill Chaudoir, Executive Director and Corporate Secretary of the Door County Economic Development Corporation. "We're tapping into the generosity of our community as both donors to this program and mentors to those who are launching or growing their business in Door County."

If you're an entrepreneur that needs capital, or an experienced business leader that would like to volunteer as a mentor, visit us online at InvestDoorCounty.org.

Of course, donations to the COIN Fund are also greatly appreciated. You can donate online, or contact us at the Community Foundation.

"This event is a real partnership between Horseshoe Bay and the Community Foundation," says Bill Boettcher, a charter member of the Golf Club and a founding director of the Community Foundation. "It's a way for us to give back to the community we love."

"The Community Foundation works to minimize administrative expenses so we can maximize the amount of money given out to charity," said Bret Bicoy, President & CEO of the Community Foundation. "In that spirit, 100% of the money that is raised will be granted out to the charities of Door County through the Community Foundation's Sustainability and Advancement Grant programs."

With her body altered to simulate the normal sensory changes associated with aging, she was able to respond to people, products, and environments as an elder.

Since 1990, Moore has designed more than 200 Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Environments for acute and sub- acute healthcare facilities throughout North America, Europe and Japan. ABC World News featured Moore as one of 50 Americans Defining the New Millennium.

The Women's Fund of Door County is impacting the lives of women and girls in our community. The $500 you pay for your Tribute goes directly into our endowment. Your gift becomes a grant to a non-profit in our community, enabling them to develop programs that focus on the entire lifespan of women. When She Thrives, We All Prosper.

Summer Sustainability Grant Applications Due July 3rd

Sustainability Grants provide the critical operational support for the charities that sustain our quality of life in Door County.

For example, Linda Laarman of the Community Foundation's Board of Directors recently presented a Sustainability Grant from our Green Fund to Coggin Heeringa of Crossroads at Big Creek. The money was used to assist with the closing costs associated with the acquisition of the Ida Bay Preserve. This is just one example of many Sustainability Grants that are awarded every quarter.

Sustainability Grants are rarely glamorous and are usually not the big ideas that stir one's soul. But this operational support is essential to the programs that sustain the parts of Door County that we love - and alleviate the challenges faced by working families because of the seasonal nature of our economy.

The Community Foundation offers Sustainability Grants because it has a fundamental belief that charities are essential part of our quality of life. Helping to support their operations is key to maintaining the parts of Door County that we love - and to alleviating the social issues arising from our unique seasonal economy.

Through the application for a Sustainability Grant, a non-profit organization might receive assistance from the Arts Fund, the Children & Youth Fund, the Education Fund, the Green Fund, the Health & Human Needs Fund, and/or the Historic Preservation Fund - all at the Door County Community Foundation.

Applications for a Summer Sustainability Grant are due Thursday, July 3rd.

For an informal assessment of your idea prior to applying, contact Christine Henkel at (920) 746-1786. More information is available online at GiveDoorCounty.org.

You can support the Sustainability Grants program by donating to one of the Funds of the Community Foundation at GiveDoorCounty.org

Endowments in Action:  Third Avenue Playhouse
The Community Foundation is honored to administer the Third Avenue Playhouse Endowment Fund and Capital Fund.

Third Avenue Playhouse is Door County's year-round theatre in historic downtown Sturgeon Bay. Programs at TAP include a concert series of fundraisers featuring local musicians benefiting Door County nonprofits, as well as a full season of plays running all summer and fall in the newly-renovated studio theatre space. As the theatre continues to expand its programming, a growing endowment is essential for TAP to maintain and enhance its position as a leading cultural institution in Door County.

Please consider incorporating gift to this endowment in your estate plans. Speak with your attorney, accountant or other estate planning professional. Or contact the Community Foundation and we'd be glad to help facilitate your generosity.

Many charities entrust the administration of their endowment funds to the Community Foundation. It's a safe and responsible way to manage endowed gifts, long-term assets or operational reserves.

The non-profit community also counts on the Community Foundation's planned giving expertise to facilitate gifts into their endowments. By aggregating these assets under the umbrella of the Community Foundation, economies of scale allow for a far more diversified investment portfolio and lower investment fees than any of the charities could achieve on their own.

For more information, contact Bret Bicoy at (920) 746-1786.
