In early March of last year I was flying on an airplane to Florida. The Community Foundation holds an annual event in the Naples area and the price of admission is having to put up with me speaking for a few minutes. At the same time I was sitting on that plane, my father was lying in a hospital bed in my home state of Hawaii, some 5,000 miles away.

I recall speaking from Florida with my brother that Wednesday night and he said that Dad was dying. The plan was for the hospice team to get Dad's house ready and he'd go home on Monday. My brother wanted all us siblings to gather 'round Dad and spend the next few weeks with him as we waited for the end to arrive.

I had to speak on Thursday, so I said I'd fly out immediately thereafter. I was sure that I could easily get home to Hawaii during the weekend and be there before Dad went into hospice care on Monday.

I managed to get a few hours of sleep that night, but I woke up ridiculously early on Thursday morning with this overwhelming need to go home immediately. I just knew that I needed to get home to Hawaii as soon as possible. Thankfully, the people in Florida were wonderfully gracious and understanding. So just a few hours before an event at which I was to be the featured speaker, I boarded a plane for Hawaii.

The plane landed in Honolulu on Friday afternoon and I arrived at the hospital at about 3:30 pm. Dad passed away three and a half hours later.

Spring Opening Reception on May 31st at the Community Foundation

The community is invited to attend a reception on Saturday, May 31 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Door County Community Foundation to open its Spring Exhibition featuring works by artists Cheryl Stidwell Parker and Sally Everhardus.

In 1999, Stidwell Parker moved to Door County to accept the position as Executive Director of the former Fairfield Museum. She retired in 2002 and eventually settled in Bailey's Harbor with her husband, Stephen Lavell. Together they established Chez Cheryl Art space, home to the annual Door Prize for Portraiture. Cheryl has been painting full time since 2003 and continues to pursue new challenges in water based oils, found object collage, photography and drawing.

Sally Everhardus has exhibited in several venues in Door County, the J.M. Kohler and Appleton Art Centers, Jack Richeson Gallery, and has won several awards.  Her work is represented locally May through October at Woodwalk Gallery, appears in the 2014 Door Prize for Portraiture, and in the "Eggstravaganza" that celebrates Egg Harbor's 50th year as a village.

The Community Foundation's reception is being coordinated with the opening of "Drawing: A Group Invitational" at the Miller Art Museum that same evening. At the Miller, 18 artists were invited to explore this ageless medium, bringing a variety of interpretation and expression in their drawings from classical to contemporary. Guests are encouraged to visit Sturgeon Bay and drop by both opening receptions.

Refreshments will be served at the Community Foundation by Morag Hornsby and her team at Serves You Right Catering.

Each quarter, different Door County artists will be invited to exhibit their work. The Gallery is normally open to the public during the Community Foundation's regular hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Celebrate a Woman in Your Life: Tribute Book 2014

Consider honoring a special woman in your life in the 2014 Tribute Book.

Has there been a woman in your life or the lives of a group of your friends who has made a significant impact on you or our community?
Tribute Book Cover
The Women's Fund of Door County gives you the unique opportunity to share with others this woman's amazing story. She may have inspired, educated, installed humor, wisdom or joy in your life. Stories are powerful. They can motivate us, spur us to action, and they can affirm us. Tell the story of someone who has impacted you or your group.

The Women's Fund of Door County is impacting the lives of women and girls in our community. The $500 you pay for your Tribute goes directly into our endowment. Your gift becomes a grant to a non-profit in our community, enabling them to develop programs that focus on the entire lifespan of women. When She Thrives, We All Prosper.

The 2014 Tribute book will be a gift to the more than 300 people who will attend our CELEBRATE WOMEN! Luncheon on Wednesday, August 12, 2014.

As we grow our endowment fund to advance and perform our mission, we invite you to become part of the Women's Fund of Door County. Celebrate and honor a woman in your life and share her story with our community.

Sunshine House creates community options for people of all abilities. With strong local support from businesses and individuals Sunshine House looks to a bright future in which options will continue to be made for the people it is honored to serve.

Please consider incorporating gift to this endowment in your estate plans. Speak with your attorney, accountant or other estate planning professional. Or contact the Community Foundation and we'd be glad to help facilitate your generosity.

Many charities entrust the administration of their endowment funds to the Community Foundation. It's a safe and responsible way to manage endowed gifts, long-term assets or operational reserves.

The non-profit community also counts on the Community Foundation's planned giving expertise to facilitate gifts into their endowments. By aggregating these assets under the umbrella of the Community Foundation, economies of scale allow for a far more diversified investment portfolio and lower investment fees than any of the charities could achieve on their own.
