Charity is more important to Door County than to any other community in Wisconsin.

Yes, I know, that sounds like hyperbole.  Our hyper-competitive society already spends too much effort labeling things as the most, least, best or worst of something. So generally I try to be more moderate in my approach to most things. But when it comes to our beloved peninsula, this is an unavoidable conclusion. Charity really is more important to Door County than to any other community in Wisconsin.

It's because the non-profit organizations of our community collectively play perhaps the most critical role in making Door County the unique community that it is, thereby attracting tourists, seasonal residents and retirees alike. Charity is also essential because it alleviates the challenges arising from the seasonal nature of our economy.

While the latter of those two observations is easy to understand, on the surface the former might seem a bit counter-intuitive. After all, few of us consider charities as an economic engine. More often we think of the non-profit sector as an outgrowth of economic prosperity. While that holds true here as well, in Door County charities are an essential ingredient in what makes our community special.

Consider for a moment, what you love about Door County.

Not-for-Profit Employment and Volunteer Fair on March 1st

The Door County YMCA and the Door County Community Foundation are co-sponsoring a Not-For-Profit Employment and Volunteer Fair on Saturday, March 1st from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the YMCA in Sturgeon Bay.  laptop-architect-woman.jpg

Door County's non-profit sector is an enormous part of our community's economy. Collectively, these organizations have total revenue of more than $105 million a year and employ an incredible number of full and part-time people in Door County.

There is no cost to either the job applicants, potential volunteers, or charities who attend the Not-for-Profit Employment and Volunteer Fair on March 1st. In addition, the Door County Job Center will be offering a Resume Writing Workshop at 11 a.m. and an Interview Skills Workshop at noon for those who are interested.

If you're a charity and you'd like to set up a table to talk with potential job applicants and/or volunteers, download the information sheet and register with Samantha Brungraber at the YMCA by calling (920) 743-4949.

Of course, if you can't attend, you can still search for jobs online at the Door County Job Center and seek out volunteer opportunities at the Volunteer Center of Door County.

Many of the Community Foundation's scholarships are administered in partnership with Door County schools and decisions as to the recipients are made there by school professionals.

However, there are a handful of scholarships for students who graduate from Sturgeon Bay, Southern Door, Gibraltar, Sevastopol or Washington Island in which the selection process is independent of local schools.

Visit the Community Foundation's website to learn more about these scholarships and to apply. All applications must be received in the Community Foundation's offices by Thursday, March 20th at 4:30 p.m.

And if you're interested in establishing a scholarship today, or as a part of your estate plans, contact Bret Bicoy at (920) 746-1786.

Endowments in Action:  Sister Bay Historical Society
The Community Foundation is honored to administer the Sister Bay Historical Society's Legacy Endowment Fund and the Operating Reserve Fund.

The Corner of the Past, operated and maintained by volunteers from the Sister Bay Historical Society, began as an effort to restore a dilapidated and abandoned 1875 farmhouse. Over the last 15 years it has grown into a 7-acre complex anchored by the Old Anderson House Museum. It also features a collection of 14 additional vintage farm buildings and period resort cottages plus a wide range of farm equipment, tools, historic documents, furnishings and photographs.

The Museum hosts a popular Saturday morning Farm Market and offers weekly hands-on demonstrations of traditional crafts by local artisans along with docent-led tours of the property. The Society also sponsors regular gatherings open to the public, inviting residents and visitors alike to experience a step back in time.

Please consider incorporating gift to this endowment in your estate plans. Speak with your attorney, accountant or other estate planning professional. Or contact the Community Foundation and we'd be glad to help facilitate your generosity.

Many charities entrust the administration of their endowment funds to the Community Foundation. It's a safe and responsible way to manage endowed gifts, long-term assets or operational reserves. The non-profit community also counts on the Community Foundation's planned giving expertise to facilitate gifts into their endowments. By aggregating these assets under the umbrella of the Community Foundation, economies of scale allow for a far more diversified investment portfolio and lower investment fees than any of the charities could achieve on their own.
