Quit smoking. Lose weight. Enjoy life. Help others. These are four of the most common New Year's resolutions, according to most everyone who surveys such things. Chances are that a couple of these are on your list as well. Sadly, less than one out of every three people will fulfill one of their New Year's resolutions. In fact, statistically speaking, about one in five of us will have already given up trying by the end of January.

Unfortunately, in today's cynical media culture, a New Year's resolution is often portrayed as something of a joke. It's seen as a statement of good intentions rather than an actual commitment to do something. It's as if New Year's resolutions are for the things we know we should be doing, but in reality, no one expects us to actually do.

That's really too bad, because a new year is a fresh start. It gives us an opportunity to assess our life and resolve to do something to make it better. Consider the definition of the word "resolution." It's a firm determination to do (or not do) something. It's not just an intention, it's a commitment to work hard to achieve a goal.

The entire concept of New Year's resolutions began two millennia ago with the ancient Romans. The month of January gets its name from Janus, the Roman god with two faces who simultaneously looked back into the old year and forward into the new. Those early New Year's resolutions always had strong moral underpinnings. It was a time to commit to bettering one's self.

Join Us on January 24th for our Gallery Opening

You are invited to attend the public dedication of the new offices of the Door County Community Foundation and the opening of the new Community Foundation Gallery on Friday, January 24th between 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 342 Louisiana Street in historic downtown Sturgeon Bay.

The works of local artists Cal Bonnivier and Karin Overbeck are the first to be displayed in the new Community Foundation Gallery.

Cal Bonnivier was born in Chicago, but moved to the quiet side of Door County to be closer to the nature that she loves. She has traveled extensively and sketched and painted all over Europe, the Bahamas, Hawaii and throughout most of the rest of the United States. Though Bonnivier has studied art for years and is degreed, most of her techniques are innovative and self-taught. Her use of oil pastel and oil on rag or rice paper with elements of collage are unique.

Karin Overbeck studied at UWGB in the late 70's. After being juried into the Miller Art Museum shows with works in lithography and ink drawing, she began working seriously with stained glass which led to her interest and further concentration on mosaics. The mosaic artwork in this exhibition is from her garden which has been featured in a number of national garden magazines as well as local and regional publications, including a feature on HGTV.

The refreshments to be served at the Community Foundation's Gallery opening are by Morag Hornsby and her team at Serves You Right Catering.

Each quarter, different Door County artists will be invited to exhibit their work. The Gallery is normally open to the public during the Community Foundation's winter hours of 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  In the Spring, the Community Foundation's Gallery will begin regular hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Endowments in Action:  Peninsula Arts Association
The Community Foundation is honored to administer the Peninsula Arts Association Living Culture Endowment Fund.

T
he Peninsula Arts Association is a non- profit organization that has been promoting and supporting the arts in Door County, WI since 1937. As a recipient of the Wisconsin Arts Board program, ArtFund, they have funded over $500,000 since 1994 to countless local artists and organizations.

In addition to bringing exciting and inspiring arts and activities to Door County through ArtFUND, they strive to support local artists and organizations by giving them skills needed to apply for funding from other sources. By assisting applicants in preparing successful applications, PAA equips the arts community in Door County with strong tools to use in writing future applications. Their grant process has led some of the applicants to apply for future funding to organizations outside the PAA, including the Wisconsin Arts Board, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Please consider incorporating gift to this endowment in your estate plans. Speak with your attorney, accountant or other estate planning professional. Or contact the Community Foundation and we'd be glad to help facilitate your generosity.

Many charities entrust the administration of their endowment funds to the Community Foundation. It's a safe and responsible way to manage endowed gifts, long-term assets or operational reserves. The non-profit community also counts on the Community Foundation's planned giving expertise to facilitate gifts into their endowments. By aggregating these assets under the umbrella of the Community Foundation, economies of scale allow for a far more diversified investment portfolio and lower investment fees than any of the charities could achieve on their own.
