On this almost mid-winter like Thanksgiving morning in Door County, I cannot help but be reminded that we're about to begin one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year. First is Black Friday - the infamous day after Thanksgiving (which now infringes on Thanksgiving itself) during which big box stores promise blockbuster deals.

Next there will be Small Business Saturday - the effort to encourage us to shop at our local small stores in an effort to steer some of that money to the local economy.

After that is Cyber Monday - when online vendors cut their prices in the hopes that you'd be tempted to send some of your holiday shopping dollars to them as well.

A heck of a lot of shopping will go on over these next few days.

The wonderful thing about this time of year is whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or Festivus, there is a spirit that ties all of these holidays together. Fundamentally, this time of year is about giving.

Unfortunately, over the years the Madison Avenue advertising firms have convinced us that during the holidays, "shopping" is a synonym for "giving." Our holiday season has become a time to buy kitchen gadgets and power tools that soon will be sitting on the shelf gathering dust.

It's not supposed to be like this. We're supposed to be giving back not just to ourselves, but to help the less fortunate. It's about sharing of our time and our resources with something bigger than ourselves. Yet giving back has become secondary to the drive to find the next doorbuster shopping deal.

But it doesn't have to be that way.

That's why the Tuesday after this shopping weekend has been christened Giving Tuesday.

It's a day to remind us that while we should take joy in buying gifts for our loved ones, we must remember that there are those in the community whose Christmas will not be so merry. Take some time today to celebrate how blessed we truly are. Then consider that there are too many of our neighbors who are struggling to make ends meet.

Join the Giving Tuesday movement and give back to the charity or cause that touches you most. There's a list of more than 360 Door County organizations on our website. Or you can give to one of the Funds of the Community Foundation.

Find the charity or cause that's right for you. Then give. Right now. Just do it.

It's what this time of year is truly about.

Sustainability Grants Touching Countless Charities

The Community Foundation's Winter 2014 deadline for Sustainability Grant applications is Thursday, January 2, 2014. The Community Foundation offers Sustainability Grants because it has a fundamental belief that charities are essential part of our quality of life. Helping to support their operations is key to maintaining the parts of Door County that we love - and to alleviating the social issues arising from our unique seasonal economy.

For instance, last year the Door County Land Trust received a grant to increase its citizen based conservation efforts. The goal was to train local residents to take a larger role in land stewardship activities to improve the health and integrity of public nature preserves throughout Door County.

The Community Clinic of Door County's workload dramatically increased after the closing of another local non-profit health center. Several of the Community Foundation's granting programs provided financial support so the Community Clinic could offer care to those without insurance.

The Altrusa Club Foundation of Door County provides school supplies to approximately 500 local children from low-income families. Again, several of the Community Foundation's granting programs provided assistance to ensure that every child has the supplies needed to enjoy a successful school year.

The Pioneer Fire Company preserves and celebrates the history of one of the original fire departments in Door County. A grant helped support its combined fire-police honor guard to recognize the first responders who serve our community.

These are just a handful of the many activities supported by the granting programs of the Door County Community Foundation.

Through the application for a Sustainability Grant, a non-profit organization might receive assistance from the Arts Fund, the Children & Youth Fund, the Education Fund, the Green Fund, the Health & Human Needs Fund, and/or the Historic Preservation Fund.

More information is available by clicking on the "Grants and Programs" tab on the Community Foundation's website. For an informal assessment of your idea before applying, please contact Christine Henkel at (920) 746-1786.

You can give back to Door County by donating any of the granting programs of the Community Foundation - online today - or through your estate plans. Please contact us to learn more!

Non-Profit Education Series:  An Introduction to Planned Giving

Planned giving must be a central part of every charity's development program - but the complexity of planned giving tools often seem overwhelming. This latest workshop in the Non-Profit Education Series hosted by the Door County Community Foundation, the Raibrook Foundation, and United Way of Door County, will focus on building a planned giving program from the perspective of a development officer and/or executive director. It will cover the basic things non-lawyers need to know to be able to secure future estate gifts for your favorite charity.

An Introduction to Planned Giving

Tuesday, December 3rd

8:00 a.m. Registration & Refreshments

8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Workshop

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Oasis Center

1756 Michigan Street in Sturgeon Bay

Topics to be covered include the most common planned giving tools, which tools work best in what kind of situation, what to listen for when talking with a donor, and other adventures from the exciting and entertaining world of planned giving.

Our guest speaker is Bret Bicoy, who has more than twenty years of experience as a professional fundraiser and/or a foundation CEO. He previously led community foundations in both Nevada and Ohio, and is the current President & CEO of the Door County Community Foundation. During his tenure, these three community foundations collectively received contributions of nearly $60 million and secured more than $90 million in known future estate commitments.

Bret was named in 2007 as a Person of Influence by In Business Las Vegas as one of the "men and women who make things happen" in Nevada. While in Ohio, the Marietta Chamber of Commerce named Bret the Telesis Community Leader of the Year as "a believer in impossible things, whose vision, enthusiasm and dedication have unquestionably made their mark on our community." A 1992 graduate of Tufts University, Bret was honored with the 2006 Young Alumni Achievement Award as one "whose distinguished accomplishments bring credit to his community, his profession, and Tufts University."

There is no cost to attend this session, but please RSVP so we can adequately prepare. To register, contact Christine Henkel at the Door County Community Foundation.

P
lease consider incorporating gift to the Isadoora Theatre Endowment Fund in your estate plans. Speak with your attorney, accountant or other estate planning professional. Or contact the Community Foundation and we'd be glad to help facilitate your generosity.

Many charities entrust the administration of their endowment funds to the Community Foundation.
It's a safe and responsible way to manage endowed gifts, long-term assets or operational reserves. The non-profit community also counts on the Community Foundation's planned giving expertise to facilitate gifts into their endowments. By aggregating these assets under the umbrella of the Community Foundation, economies of scale allow for a far more diversified investment portfolio and lower investment fees than any of the charities could achieve on their own.
