Greetings!
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeastern Wisconsin once had a strong presence in Door County. But that once vibrant program waned during the last decade until there was only a single match left between an adult "Big" and a child "Little" in the entire county as recently as a year and half ago. That all changed when Door County resident Jeff Ottum drove to Green Bay and sat himself down in the office of Big Brothers Big Sisters new Executive Director Todd McPeek.
"Jeff made a compelling case why Big Brothers Big Sisters needed to better serve the Door County community," says McPeek. After a few visits to the peninsula, McPeek found a willing partner in Patti Vickman, then the newly installed superintendent of the Southern Door School District.
"The kids in our program often don't have as many strong relationships in their life as they should with caring adults," says McPeek. "So they don't dream as much as they should. Our goal is to provide children facing adversity with a strong, enduring and professionally supported relationship to change their lives for the better."
Working with Vickman, McPeek and his team at Big Brothers Big Sisters launched a site-based program at Southern Door Schools last school year. The great advantage of a site-based program is that while there are still individual matches between a Big and a Little, they meet together as a part of a larger group. "The nice thing is you don't have to come up with activities every week," says McPeek. "You plug in to what's already going on."
Read the rest of this story in the Peninsula Pulse.
If you have children, we hope you're enjoying the renewed peace and quiet (at least at home) of a new school year!

Membership Campaign Announced at Women's Fund Luncheon
A crowd of 330 guests attended the 4th Annual Celebrate Women! Luncheon at Stone Harbor Resort and Conference Center on Wednesday, August 14, 2013. This was the fourth year in a row that the luncheon sold out.
The 2013 special guest was Theresa Tudury, an accomplished musician and writer from San Francisco. Her talk, "If You Really Knew Who I Am," described how the lives of women are a tapestry - woven with the threads of our life's experiences from young girls to mature women.
The Women's Fund also announced the launch of a new Membership campaign. When you become a Member of the Women's Fund, you're joining with a vibrant group of talented people who are dedicated to building, enriching, and nurturing the lives of women and girls through collective wisdom and philanthropy.
Members of the Women's Fund are invited to special Members-only receptions and are given an advance opportunity to reserve a seat at the always sold-out Celebrate Women! Luncheon. Tickets for this year's luncheon went on sale on June 1st and sold out in just 19 days - nearly two months before the event! As a Member, you'll get early access to a seat at the 2014 luncheon.
As a token of our thanks, and as a visible sign of your Membership in the Women's Fund, all Members receive a red scarf monogrammed with the Women's Fund logo.
The Women's Fund has also posted the Grant Application for Fall 2013 Sustainability Grants. Priority will be given to applications that provide education and information, build self-esteem and dignity, support solutions for critical issues, and are research-based and data-driven with a focus on solutions.
The deadline for applications is Thursday, September 26th. Applications materials are now available for download.

Fall Sustainability Grant Application Deadline is October 3
The Community Foundation's Fall Sustainability Grant Application is Thursday, October 3rd. Applications are now available online.
Sustainability Grants provide the critical operational support for the charities that sustain our quality of life in Door County. They help pay the salary of a case manager working with troubled teens, buy music stands for a local performing arts group, install piping to bring water to a community garden, and pay teachers to help with math and reading instruction during the summer.
Sustainability Grants are rarely glamorous and are usually not the big ideas that stir one's soul. But this operational support is essential to the programs that sustain the parts of Door County that we love - and alleviate the challenges faced by working families because of the seasonal nature of our economy.
The Community Foundation offers Sustainability Grants because it has a fundamental belief that charities are essential part of our quality of life. Helping to support their operations is key to maintaining the parts of Door County that we love - and to alleviating the social issues arising from our unique seasonal economy.
Through the application for a Sustainability Grant, a non-profit organization might receive assistance from the Arts Fund, the Children & Youth Fund, the Education Fund, the Green Fund, the Health & Human Needs Fund, and/or the Historic Preservation Fund.
For more information, or to informally discuss your ideas, call (920) 746-1786, or email Christine Henkel. You can also create a charitable fund in your estate plans to support the charities or causes you care about the most. Contact Bret Bicoy for more information.

Endowments in Action: Gibraltar Area Education Endowment
The Community Foundation is honored to administer Gibraltar Area Education Endowment.
It is the mission of the Gibraltar Schools, in partnership with the family and community, to strive for excellence in educating each of our children to live responsible, creative, and fulfilling lives in a global society.
The Gibraltar Area Schools serve the northern Door County, Wisconsin communities of Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Ephraim, Sister Bay, and Ellison Bay. The Elementary School, Middle School, High School, and District Offices are located on a common campus in Fish Creek.
Both U.S. News and World Report and Newsweek Magazine have declared Gibraltar High School to be among the "Best in America."
Please consider incorporating gift to the Gibraltar Area Education Endowment in your estate plans. Speak with your attorney, accountant or other estate planning professional. Or contact the Community Foundation and we'd be glad to help facilitate your generosity.
Many charities entrust the administration of their endowment funds to the Community Foundation.
It's a safe and responsible way to manage endowed gifts, long-term assets or operational reserves. The non-profit community also counts on the Community Foundation's planned giving expertise to facilitate gifts into their endowments. By aggregating these assets under the umbrella of the Community Foundation, economies of scale allow for a far more diversified investment portfolio and lower investment fees than any of the charities could achieve on their own.
