Greetings!

Our whole community was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of a couple of Door County's most generous souls. Ruth Barker and Lee Traven, two absolutely wonderful people who lived long and inspiring lives, each left this world in April. Ruth Barker and her late husband Hartley were named by the Door County Community Foundation as the 2006 Philanthropists of the Year. That same honor was bestowed upon Lee Traven in 2011.

The philanthropic nature of these good folks was well known by all, so it's not betraying a confidence to note that many local charities will be recipients of the Barkers' and Traven's generosity through their respective estate plans. Very often the charitable gifts in an estate plan are the largest contributions that a donor will ever make. It's a remarkable way to leave a true philanthropic legacy. Unfortunately, not nearly enough of us are following in the footsteps of these wonderfully generous families.

While the numbers fluctuate slightly from year to year, the annual Giving USA study tells us that about 75 percent of Americans make at least one gift to charity during the course of a year. Yet only about 7 percent of us include a charitable contribution in our estate plans.

Similarly, University of Georgia conducted a longitudinal study of Americans more than 50 years old who donate at least $500 a year to charity. During more than a decade of research, the study found that only about 9.5 percent of these older adults - all of whom are regular donors to charity - included a gift to a nonprofit organization in their estate plans.

If you ponder these statistics for a moment, you'll realize just how strange this really is.

2013 Philanthropists of the Year:  Spencer & Barbara Gould

The Door County Community Foundation named Spencer and Barbara Gould as the 2013 Door County Philanthropists of the Year at a luncheon on June 26th before a full house of 175 guests at the Horseshoe Bay Golf Club in Egg Harbor.

"A philanthropist is born when a donor's passion compels them to give more of themselves than merely money," say Bret Bicoy, President & CEO of the Community Foundation. "They give of their time to the charities they care about. They share their wisdom as members of boards of directors.  Philanthropists champion the causes that resonate in their heart and cannot help but openly share their passion with those around them. Their enthusiasm for service is contagious."

These are the qualities the Community Foundation sees in Spencer and Barbara Gould.

Barbara and Spencer Gould have a lifelong interest in music, serving on symphony boards and working in a variety of community organizations, supporting the arts.

They met in 1956 on a train encountering each other when Spencer asked Barbara to help him peel an orange. They married later that year.

Graduates of Carleton College, Spencer and Barbara have been generous supporters of their alma mater, receiving the Donald C. Cowling Cup in 1985. This honor, named for the longest serving president of Carleton College, is awarded to individuals for extraordinary service to Carleton.

Spencer's family were long time members of the Door County community so it was no surprise when Barbra and Spencer moved to Door County in 1988. Since their arrival they have been involved in the American Folklore Theater, Peninsula Singers, Mid-Summer's Music, Ephraim Foundation, YMCA, Northern Door Child Care, the Ridges, Land Trust, Nature Conservancy, and the Peninsula Music Festival.

"This year's honorees, as well as those who proceeded them, have set an incredible example for all of us to follow," says David Eliot, Vice Chairman of the Community Foundation's Board of Directors and master of ceremonies for the event.

For more information about Spencer and Barbara, or to see a listing of previous honorees, visit the Community Foundation's website. There is also a short video of the presentation of the award hosted online at the Door County Advocate.

Pay Tribute to a Special Woman in Your Life

Is there a woman in your life who has made a significant impact? The Women's Fund of Door County gives you the unique opportunity to share with others the amazing story of this woman in your life. She may have inspired you, educated you, instilled humor, wisdom or joy in your life. What influential piece of advice did this particular woman give to you to remember and to pass on to others?

We are publishing our second annual Tribute Booklet entitled "A Celebration of Women." Your one-time gift of $500 to the Women's Fund Endowment enables you to pay tribute to an amazing woman in your life. Share her biography, along with a photo, describing how she has touched your life and others. This booklet will be given to all attendees at our yearly CELEBRATE WOMEN! Luncheon on Wednesday, August 14. With over 300 people in attendance the story you tell will encourage and inspire others.

As we grow our Endowment Fund to advance and perform our mission, we invite you to become part of the Women's Fund of Door County. Celebrate and honor a woman in your life and share her story with our community.

Endowments in Action:  Friends of Toft Point
The Community Foundation is honored to administer the Friends of Toft Point Invasive Species Eradication Endowment Fund and their Operating Endowment Fund.

The Friends of Toft Point, Inc. formed in 2000 in order to protect the Toft Point State Natural Area from unlawful destructive activities. The property is owned by the University of Wisconsin and managed by the UW Green Bay Cofrin Center for Biodiversity.

Its mission is to support the management plan of the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay, to help preserve the flora and fauna of this property and to help educate visitors about the natural history and the Toft family history of this State Natural Area and National Natural Landmark.

Its activities include education of visitors, trail maintenance and removal of invasive species. The endowments help preserve and protect Toft Point and assist with the control and eradication of invasive species.

Please consider incorporating gift to either of the Friends of Toft Point endowment funds in your estate plans. Speak with your attorney, accountant or other estate planning professional. Or contact the Community Foundation and we'd be glad to help facilitate your generosity.

Many charities entrust the administration of their endowment funds to the Community Foundation.

It's a safe and responsible way to manage endowed gifts, long-term assets or operational reserves. The non-profit community also counts on the Community Foundation's planned giving expertise to facilitate gifts into their endowments. By aggregating these assets under the umbrella of the Community Foundation, economies of scale allow for a far more diversified investment portfolio and lower investment fees than any of the charities could achieve on their own.

Guide to Endowments
The Community Foundation is pleased to publish the Guide to Endowments at the Door County Community Foundation, Inc.

The Guide highlights different charities so families have options to consider when giving back - either today or through their estate plans. We encourage families to download their copy today!

The Guide is also an excellent tool for estate planning professionals when talking with their clients about Door County charities. We're happy to send attorneys, accountants, investment advisors, and trust officers a supply of Guides (and display holder) for use in their office. If you'd like a stack for your clients, contact us at the Community Foundation.

This is just another way the Community Foundation is encouraging people to give back to sustain the community we love!

The Door County Community Foundation, Inc. is a collection of separate charitable funds set up by individuals, families, non-profit organizations, private foundations and businesses that are managed, invested and disbursed for the current and future good of Door County.
