| Greetings! |
"In the morning there was a big wind blowing and the waves were running high up on the beach and he was awake a long time before he remembered that his heart was broken."
These words of Ernest Hemingway come to mind as I sit outside on this beautiful Hawaiian morning. A few days ago I was in Florida on business for the Door County Community Foundation when I got the call to fly to O'ahu as my father's health was rapidly beginning to fail. Dad passed away on March 15th, just a few hours after I arrived. In nine more days he would have celebrated his 90th birthday.
Bernaldo Daniel Bicoy, or Bernie as he was known to his friends, had the most generous spirit I have ever known. Perhaps I'm delving too far into the personal with this column, but I think in his approach to life there are some universal lessons about generosity that apply to all of us.
When we think of generosity, we immediately think of money - and Dad certainly did his part. But generosity comes in many other forms. And my father exhibited them all as well.
Read the rest of this story in the Peninsula Pulse. And remember to tell your family that you love them. You never know how much time you'll have together. Treasure it.
Bret N. Bicoy, President & CEO

Spring Sustainability Grants Deadline is April 18
|
The Community Foundation's Spring Sustainability Grants Deadline is quickly approaching. Applications and supporting materials should be delivered to the Community Foundation by April 18th.
Sustainability Grants provide the critical operational support for the charities that sustain our quality of life in Door County.
The Community Foundation offers Sustainability Grants because it has a fundamental belief that charities are essential part of our quality of life. Helping to support their operations is key to maintaining the parts of Door County that we love - and to alleviating the social issues arising from our unique seasonal economy.
Sustainability Grants are rarely glamorous and are usually not the big ideas that stir one's soul. But this operational support is essential to the programs that sustain the parts of Door County that we love - and alleviate the challenges faced by working families because of the seasonal nature of our economy.
Through the application for a Sustainability Grant, a non-profit organization might receive assistance from the Arts Fund, the Children & Youth Fund, the Education Fund, the Green Fund, the Health & Human Needs Fund, and/or the Historic Preservation Fund. There no longer are separate applications for each of these Discretionary Funds as there were in the past. Consider making a contribution to any of these Funds and your gift will be invested back into the community as a Sustainability Grant.
Sustainability Grant applications are reviewed throughout the year. For more information, visit our website, send us an email, or call Christine Henkel at (920) 746-1786.

Endowments in Action: Ephraim Yacht Club
|
The Ephraim Yacht Club is Door County's family-oriented community sailing center, open Memorial Day through Labor Day. Founded in 1906, the EYC offers sailing lessons for children and adults, has 40 sailboats available for member use, and promotes amateur sailing competition on beautiful Eagle Harbor in the historic Village of Ephraim. Membership is inexpensive and is open to all.
The primary purposes of the EYC are education in the sport of sailing and the promotion of amateur sailboat racing. The EYC offers lessons from mid-June to mid-August. Its endowment helps provide funds for lessons for community scholarship recipients, to maintain its fleet of sailboats, and for capital improvements to its clubhouse and dock. Please consider incorporating gift to the Eprhaim Yacht Club Endowment Fund in your estate plans. Speak with your attorney, accountant or other estate planning professional. Or contact the Community Foundation and we'd be glad to help facilitate your generosity. Many charities entrust the administration of their endowment funds to the Community Foundation. It's a safe and responsible way to manage endowed gifts, long-term assets or operational reserves. The non-profit community also counts on the Community Foundation's planned giving expertise to facilitate gifts into their endowments. By aggregating these assets under the umbrella of the Community Foundation, economies of scale allow for a far more diversified investment portfolio and lower investment fees than any of the charities could achieve on their own.
