| Greetings! |
Door County is the most generous community in one of the least generous states in America.
In several columns over the last few months, I've discussed what drives the high levels of giving in Door County. Now it's time to talk about Wisconsin's relative lack of generosity.
To review, the "How America Gives" study examined more than 35 million tax returns and calculated the average discretionary income (leftover income after a community's cost of living is accounted for) in each community in the United States. The percentage of discretionary income that is donated to charity gives us the most accurate way to compare giving from one community to the next.
The study's data clearly proves that Door County is easily the most generous county in Wisconsin, donating an average of 4.1% of our discretionary income to charity. We who call Door County home should feel good about our generosity when compared to the 71 other counties that are our Wisconsin peers. Unfortunately, Wisconsin as a whole does not measure up very well compared to its peers of the 49 other states.
In fact, if Wisconsin wanted to move into the list of the top 5 most generous states, every single Wisconsin resident would have to double the amount of money they give to charity. Clearly it's financially possible for Wisconsin residents to be more generous - the residents of 43 other states have proven that - but what is it that is keeping Wisconsin from maximizing its generosity? Understanding the role religion plays in giving is a key factor in answering that question. Read the rest of this story in the Peninsula Pulse.Spring is almost upon us. Enjoy winter while it lasts!

Recent Sustainability Grants Presented to Door County Charities
|
The Community Foundation recently presented checks to the Peninsula Players and the Namur Belgian Heritage Foundation as a part of our Sustainability Grants program.
The Peninsula Players received a Sustainability Grant from the Community Foundation's Arts Fund and Education Fund to support their "The Play's the Thing" program. Kaaren Northrop, Community Foundation Board member, is pictured presenting the check to Brian Kelsey, Managing Director of the Peninsula Players.
Working in partnership with local school districts, Lawrence University and Bjorklunden, the Peninsula Players offered a student play writing contest accompanied by professionally presented readings of plays related to Door County and Wisconsin.
"The arts are central to who we are as a community," says Bret Bicoy, President & CEO of the Community Foundation. "This terrific program is making the resources of the Peninsula Players accessible to students in our Door County. It's a wonderfully collaborative project between some of the great institutions of our community."
The Community Foundation also presented a Sustainability Grant to the Namur Belgian Heritage Foundation. The St. Mary of the Snows Church has been rechristened as the Belgian Heritage Center. The check was presented by Polly Alberts, Board member of the Community Foundation, to Ann Jinkins and Christine Chaudoir, Board members of the Namur Belgian Heritage Foundation.
This grant from the Community Foundation's Historic Preservation Fund and the Clifford and Clara Herlache Heritage Foundation will be used to help convert the sacristy of the former church into a community kitchen. The grant is part of an ongoing effort to restore St. Mary of the Snows, a church that was founded in 1860.
"We're honored to be able to help preserve and restore this Door County landmark," says Bicoy. "St. Mary of the Snows served an important role in the history of Northeast Wisconsin. We're pleased that it can continue to thrive as the Belgian Heritage Center." St. Mary of the Snows was where Abbot Bernard Pennings first served after arriving in the United States. Pennings would later go on to found St. Norbert College in DePere, Wisconsin.
Sustainability Grants provide the critical operational support for the charities that sustain our quality of life in Door County. The Community Foundation offers Sustainability Grants because it has a fundamental belief that charities are essential part of our quality of life. Helping to support their operations is key to maintaining the parts of Door County that we love - and to alleviating the social issues arising from our unique seasonal economy.
Through the application for a Sustainability Grant, a non-profit organization might receive assistance from the Arts Fund, the Children & Youth Fund, the Education Fund, the Green Fund, the Health & Human Needs Fund, and/or the Historic Preservation Fund. There no longer are separate applications for each of these Discretionary Funds as there were in the past. Consider making a contribution to any of these Funds and your gift will be invested back into the community as a Sustainability Grant.
Sustainability Grant applications are reviewed throughout the year. The next deadline is Thursday, April 18th. For more information, visit our website, send us an email, or call Christine Henkel at (920) 746-1786.

GO BO Foundation Awards Grant to Children's Medical Center
|
The GO BO Foundation recently presented a grant to Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee as a part of its role serving the children of Door County and Wisconsin as a whole.
The GO BO Foundation's mission is to bring hope to children with life-threatening medical conditions by funding research, supporting treatment, and helping their families during times of financial need. One of the ways the GO BO Foundation fulfills this mission is by investing in organizations that provide high quality treatment options and are searching for a cure.
This donation to the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin is being used to help create the Dr. David A. Margolis Chair in Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant.
Bo reminded us what true courage means, and why one boy can inspire a multitude with nothing more than a smile and a dream to help others. Paying it Forward...this is Bo's dream.
At the check presentation were Chris Lorona and Jessica DeJardin, two Door County residents who have received care at the hospital; Dr. David Margolis, Annika Johnson and Rolf Johnson.
Visit the GO BO Foundation website to learn more. Then consider making a charitable gift with a credit card to the GO BO Foundation!

| 2013 College Scholarship Application Deadline is March 19 |
The deadline for the Door County Community Foundation's 2013 Scholarships is coming up soon. Visit the Community Foundation's website or the guidance office of your Door County high school to learn how you can apply. Many of the Community Foundation's scholarships are administered in partnership with Door County schools and decisions as to the recipients are made there by school professionals. However, there are a handful of scholarships for students who graduate from Sturgeon Bay, Southern Door, Gibraltar, Sevastopol or Washington Island in which the selection process is independent of local schools. Visit the Community Foundation's website to learn more about these scholarships and to apply. All applications must be received in the Community Foundation's offices by Tuesday, March 19th at 4:00 p.m. And if you're interested in establishing a scholarship today, or as a part of your estate plans, contact Bret Bicoy at (920) 746-1786.

Endowments in Action: Egg Harbor Historical Society
|
The mission of the Egg Harbor Historical Society is to make history come alive for both residents and visitors. Since its founding in late 2009, the Society has started collecting oral histories, identified most of the community's historic sites and buildings, affiliated with the State Historical Society, launched a website, and obtained 501(c)(3) status. The Society plans to publish a family history book, launch a program of self-guided tours of the Village and Town, hold its annual picnic in August and commence a program to collect and electronically preserve photos, documents and artifacts. In addition, the Society has started an endowment fund with endowment donations from many of its members. P lease consider incorporating gift to the Egg Harbor Historical Society Endowment Fund in your estate plans. Speak with your attorney, accountant or other estate planning professional. Or contact the Community Foundation and we'd be glad to help facilitate your generosity. Many charities entrust the administration of their endowment funds to the Community Foundation. It's a safe and responsible way to manage endowed gifts, long-term assets or operational reserves. The non-profit community also counts on the Community Foundation's planned giving expertise to facilitate gifts into their endowments. By aggregating these assets under the umbrella of the Community Foundation, economies of scale allow for a far more diversified investment portfolio and lower investment fees than any of the charities could achieve on their own.
