| Greetings! |
Door County is the most generous county in Wisconsin. As I wrote in the Pulse last month, the "How America Gives" study reviewed more than 35 million tax returns and calculated the average discretionary income (leftover income after a community's cost of living is accounted for) in each community in the United States. Then they determined the percentage of that discretionary income which is given to charity in each year. It's by far the most accurate way to compare one community's generosity to another.
Door County residents give an average of 4.1 percent of discretionary income to charity each year, which is the highest of Wisconsin's 72 counties. We donate 21 percent more than the average Wisconsin family. We also are dramatically more generous than our neighboring counties. Door County residents donate 28 percent more than Outagamie County residents, 32 percent more than Brown and Kewaunee County, 33 percent more than Manitowoc and Marinette, and 52 percent more than Oconto.
Which begs the question, why are we so generous as compared to the rest of Wisconsin? There seem to be two primary factors at play that drive Door County's generosity.
Read the rest of this story in the Peninsula Pulse.I hope you're enjoying the incredible beauty that is winter in Door County.

New Sustainability Grants and Advancement Grants Announced
|
The Community Foundation is pleased to announce that it has reorganized its Community Impact Grants into two parts: Sustainability Grants and Advancement Grants.
Sustainability Grants provide the critical operational support for the charities that sustain our quality of life in Door County. Sustainability grants help pay the salary of a case manager working with troubled teens, buy music stands for a local performing arts group, install piping to bring water to a community garden, and pay teachers to help with math and reading instruction during the summer. Sustainability Grants are rarely glamorous and are usually not the big ideas that stir one's soul. But this operational support is essential to the programs that sustain the parts of Door County that we love - and alleviate the challenges faced by working families because of the seasonal nature of our economy. The Community Foundation offers Sustainability Grants because it has a fundamental belief that charities are essential part of our quality of life. Helping to support their operations is key to maintaining the parts of Door County that we love - and to alleviating the social issues arising from our unique seasonal economy. The Spring Sustainability Grant deadline is Thursday, April 18th.
Advancement Grants invest in collaborative efforts which lead to systemic change and advance our quality of life in Door County. Advancement Grants invest in collaborative efforts which lead to systemic change and advance our quality of life in Door County. These grants support initiatives which look at entire systems in our community and work to bring about greater efficiencies if not a whole scale change in how things are done. An Advancement Grant might bring changes to how we deliver a service in Door County - such as transportation. The Community Foundation made the initial investment in Door-Tran, created the corporation, and lent one of our Board members to serve as an organizer and President of the new Door-Tran Board. Advancement Grants also fill significant gaps in service - such as micro-lending to small entrepreneurial companies which create job opportunities. The Community Foundation is in the process of launching a subsidiary corporation, the Door County Community Opportunity Investment Network (COIN), to facilitate such investments because the most effective human service program is one which helps its clients get good jobs. Through the Advancement Grants process, a non-profit organization might receive assistance from the Arts Fund, the Children & Youth Fund, the Education Fund, the Green Fund, the Health & Human Needs Fund, the Historic Preservation Fund and/or the For Good Forever Fund - the fund for all of Door County. There no longer are separate applications for each of these Discretionary Funds as there were in the past. There is no formal application process for an Advancement Grant. Instead, these initiatives are of the Community Foundation's making. Or they might arise from a charity, group, or an individual who approaches us with a good idea.
For more information about the Community Foundation's granting programs, contact Christine Henkel at (920) 746-1786.

The Door County Community Foundation's 2013 Scholarship Applications are now available on the Community Foundation's website and at the guidance offices of the appropriate local high schools. Tuesday, March 5th
8:30 a.m. Registration & Refreshments
9:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon Workshop
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Oasis Center
1756 Michigan Street in Sturgeon Bay
A logic model often is an important management tool used in nonprofit organizations, where the mission and vision are not aimed at achieving a financial benefit. In such situations, where profit is not the intended result, it may be difficult to monitor progress toward outcomes. A logic model is a systematic, visual way to present a planned program or organization with its underlying assumptions and theoretical framework. It is a picture of how and why you believe a program or organization will work. A logic model is often used by grant writers to paint a picture of how an organization's proposed program will work. Many funders want to see a logic model in the program design (or methods) section of a grant application.
The guest speaker is Dawn Helmrich from United Way of Greater Milwaukee.
There is no cost to attend this workshop, but we do ask that you register in advance by calling United Way of Door County at (920) 746-9645 or via email to Amy Kohnle.

| Endowments in Action: Door County Medical Center Foundation |
The Community Foundation is honored to administer the Door County Medical Center Foundation Fund and the David Spude Cancer Center Fund.
The Door County Medical Center Foundation was created over 20 years ago with the mission to develop and manage giving opportunities that support the health care needs of the community. Since its inception in 1988, the Foundation has provided fund raising and grant writing support to Ministry Door County Medical Center that has helped to create new programs, provide health care related scholarship opportunities, update technology, construct new state of the art facilities, create endowment funds and provide hospital wide volunteer opportunities.
Please consider incorporating gift to the Door County Medical Center Foundation Fund or the David Spude Cancer Center Fund in your estate plans. Speak with your attorney, accountant or other estate planning professional. Or contact the Community Foundation and we'd be glad to help facilitate your generosity.
Many charities entrust the administration of their endowment funds to the Community Foundation.
It's a safe and responsible way to manage endowed gifts, long-term assets or operational reserves. The non-profit community also counts on the Community Foundation's planned giving expertise to facilitate gifts into their endowments. By aggregating these assets under the umbrella of the Community Foundation, economies of scale allow for a far more diversified investment portfolio and lower investment fees than any of the charities could achieve on their own.
