Greetings!

We just finished up with Black Friday - the infamous day after Thanksgiving (which now infringes on Thanksgiving itself) during which big box stores promise blockbuster deals.

Then there was Small Business Saturday - the effort to encourage us to shop at our local small stores in an effort to steer some of that money to the local economy.

That was followed by Cyber Monday - when online vendors cut their prices in the hopes that you'd be tempted to send some of your holiday shopping dollars to them as well.

There's been a heck of a lot of shopping going on over these last few days.

The wonderful thing about this time of year is whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or Festivus, there is a spirit that ties all of these holidays together. Fundamentally, this time of year is about giving.

Unfortunately, over the years the Madison Avenue advertising firms have convinced us that during the holidays, "shopping" is a synonym for "giving." Our holiday season has become a time to buy kitchen gadgets and power tools that soon will be sitting on the shelf gathering dust.

It's not supposed to be like this. We're supposed to be giving back not just to ourselves, but to help the less fortunate. It's about sharing of our time and our resources with something bigger than ourselves. Yet giving back has become secondary to the drive to find the next doorbuster shopping deal.

But it doesn't have to be that way.

That's why today has been christened Giving Tuesday.

It's the day to remind us that while we should take joy in buying gifts for our loved ones, we must remember that there are those in the community whose Christmas will not be so merry. Take some time today to celebrate how blessed we truly are. Then consider that there are too many of our neighbors who are struggling to make ends meet.

Finally, join the Giving Tuesday movement and give back to the charity or cause that touches you most.

In Door County, you can support a wide range of human service charities through a gift to the United Way. Or you can give to countless different causes by making a gift to any of the funds of the Door County Community Foundation

Or search the Volunteer Center for a charity that can use a donation of your time.

If these aren't right for you, visit the Community Foundation's listing of more than 350 charities in Door County.

This is Giving Tuesday. Find the charity or cause that's right for you.  Then give. Right now. Just do it.

It's what this time of year is truly about.

Use a Donor Advised Fund to Facilitate Your Giving

The year is coming to an end - and your accountant is advising you that this would be a good year to earn a sizeable charitable deduction. But with the new year just around the corner and the holidays approaching, you don't have the time to deal with charitable giving.

The solution? Open a Donor Advised Fund at the Door County Community Foundation! With a gift today you'll earn a tax deduction in this tax year, then you can take as much time as you need to determine which charities will ultimately benefit from your generosity!

This is just one of the advantages of using a Donor Advised Fund to facilitate your giving. It's a simpler, cheaper, and more tax-efficient alternative to creating your own private foundation!

Here's how it works:

  • Open your Donor Advised Fund at the Community Foundation with a gift of at least $1,000.
  • You can give cash, appreciated stocks, real estate, or other assets.
  • We set up a special Fund in your name, in the name of your family or business, or in honor of any person or organization you choose.
  • Your gift to your Donor Advised Fund earns you a tax deduction in the year your gift is made.
  • You can then support the causes and organizations you care about most with future distributions from your Donor Advised Fund.
  • We handle all the administrative details and issue grants to charities in the name of your Donor Advised Fund (or if you prefer, grants can be made anonymously).

If you choose, your gift can be placed into an endowment that is invested over time. Earnings from your Fund are used to make grants literally forever. Your gift - and all future earnings from your gift - can become a permanent source of community capital, forever giving back in your family's name. It's an incredible legacy for Door County!

Contact the Community Foundation, or speak your own tax professional to learn more about how a Donor Advised Fund can help you be generous in a very tax-efficient way.

In this time of year in which we give thanks for the abundance in our lives, please consider expressing your appreciation for the wonderfully verdant environment in which we live by making a generous gift to the Door County Green Fund. Green Fund Logo

Your contribution to the Green Fund isn't just a gift, it's an investment in the future of Door County. Your generosity is pooled with countless others in our community to preserve, protect and enhance this remarkable quality of life.

With your friendship, the Green Fund will continue to invest in efforts that provide environmental education, fund land preservation, eradicate invasive species, and support other types of "green" programs in Door County.

And because of the continuing partnership with the Door County Community Foundation, Inc., the operating costs of the Green Fund are less than 1%. That means virtually every penny of your gift will distributed to local environmental projects. Working together, we're able to magnify our impact on the landscape of Door County.

We are deeply thankful to the community for all their friendship and support over this past year. We hope you'll join us as a 2013 Member of the Door County Green Fund.

Go Bo Foundation Launches New Website

The Go Bo Foundation has launched a new website!

Bo Johnson was diagnosed with a rare form of Leukemia, EM/AML, at the age of 12. He has been battling this disease for the past year, and lost on Sept. 28, 2012.

Prior to his illness, Bo was a normal active boy, enjoying life with family and friends. The illness that took his life could NOT stifle his spirit or courage. Facing the most serious medical condition, Bo chose to show all of us what it means to "live life to the fullest & enjoy every day."

Bo reminded us what true courage means, and why one boy can inspire a multitude with nothing more than a smile and a dream to help others.

Paying it Forward...this is Bo's dream.

The Go Bo Foundation was created to keep Bo's dreams going. It helps:

  • Children's Hospital of Wisconsin
  • MACC Fund which researches better treatments for childhood cancer
  • People in our community that are struggling with their own battles with cancer
  • Children that are continuing their fight at the HOT Unit (Hematology, Oncology and Transplant)
Visit the new Go Bo Foundation website to learn more. Then consider making a charitable gift with a credit card to the Go Bo Foundation! Thank you for your friendship and support! Contributions are deductible to the fullest extent as allowed by law.

Endowments in Action:  Door County Library Foundation

The Community Foundation is honored to administer the Door County Library Foundation's Endowment Fund.

Door County Library provides materials in a variety of media that record human knowledge, ideas and culture, then organizes these for ready access. It offers guidance and encouragement in their use for all County residents and visitors. Services include books, magazines, online databases, music and film that is lent from the eight library sites in Forestville, Sturgeon Bay, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, DC Library Baileys Harbor, Ephraim, Sister Bay/Liberty Grove and Washington Island.

Public access computers are available at all locations and wireless computer access can be found in and around all of the libraries. These services are critical for job applications, tax filing and as knowledge sources. More and more government and employment information is available only online.  The online databases provide access to national newspapers and our local Peninsula Pulse and Door County Advocate. Informational programs for adults and youth to foster learning and reading are held year round.

Please consider incorporating gift to the Door County Library Foundation Endowment Fund in your estate plans. Speak with your attorney, accountant or other estate planning professional. Or contact the Community Foundation and we'd be glad to help facilitate your generosity.

M
any charities entrust the administration of their endowment funds to the Community Foundation.

I
t's a safe and responsible way to manage endowed gifts, long-term assets or operational reserves. The non-profit community also counts on the Community Foundation's planned giving expertise to facilitate gifts into their endowments. By aggregating these assets under the umbrella of the Community Foundation, economies of scale allow for a far more diversified investment portfolio and lower investment fees than any of the charities could achieve on their own.
