2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel
|
What is it?
Ram, perhaps in a fit of inspiration from across town, dubbed its new diesel "EcoDiesel" -- under the principle that performance for the people is more palatable if it's disguised with "Eco" feel-goodism.
It works. Because for 2014, the Ram 1500 becomes the first light-duty truck to receive a new and shiny diesel, besting Nissan's Cummins-powered V8 Titan to market by at least a year when the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel goes on sale next January. And thanks to all the corporate synergy floating around in the air, Ram didn't have to go far to find a suitable engine.
It's a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 built by VM Motori in Italy, coincidentally half-owned by Fiat. Like its Grand Cherokee comrade-in-arms, it's paired to an 8-speed automatic built by ZF, shared with a zillion vehicles, but here branded "Torqueflite" for the history junkies. The combination offers up 240 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, optimized for low-end torque and a towing capacity of 9,200 lbs. Compared to the Ram 1500's two most popular engines, expect to pay approximately $2,800 more than the 5.7-liter Hemi V8, $4,000 more than the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6.
What can you tow with 9,200 lbs, anyway? Another Ram 1500? A charter bus filled with the Detroit Lions? Coachella? (The 2500 and 3500 models can tow up to 30,000 lbs, which as Graham Kozak found out, equates to two tractors at the same time.) After driving the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, let's just say that, like its other figures, it's...enough.
What's it Like to Drive?
Ram made sure to emphasize that the engine isn't betraying legions of Cummins fans out there, who if faced upon any uncertainty might storm into Auburn Hills, 3500 Duallies burping and blazing with the cacophony of Patton's 2nd Armored. Where the 6.7-liter Cummins inline-six diesel snorts and rumbles, a four-wheeled Harley-Davidson (that can trailer behind it up to 38 Road Kings), the 1500's Italian diesel is quiet, nonintrusive.
The console-mounted rotary knob clicks into place with reassurance. Put it in drive, take off at a stoplight, and the Ram EcoDiesel won't impress you with brisk torque acceleration -- it builds smoothly, but it's far more sedate than pulling off burnouts from the big Cummins diesels. Paired with the eight-speed transmission, it never strains or struggles for effort -- many drivers will find that it is all the power they'll ever need. Its smoothness suggests the changing role of trucks as citizens of the world, not just the countryside: city slickers now make up a substantial chunk of Ram sales, necessitating the inclusion of standard features like front parking sensors -- that's just how Ram wants it.
The fine people at Ram put us upon the most devilishly twisty road in all of Malibu, a road so slow and windy that sports car drivers are reluctant to unwind on it. (One can replicate this experience by seesawing aberrantly through a parking garage at 3 in the morning.) Hard on the brakes, moderate acceleration every few seconds. Through this Trial By Twisties, the optional air suspension on our Ram made an admirable effort at preventing nausea from all occupants. (We later drove up the same path on conventional coil-sprung 1500s, which wafted slightly more but still felt collected and controllable. "Carlike" might seem like a pejorative word, but in both cases it's in fact a boon.) And after a stint on the long and lazy Pacific Coast Highway, we hit a mixture of 22.3 mpg. This was an average figure for us, though one member in our Ram 1500 motorcade hit an applause-worthy 27 mpg. The people at Ram may have awarded him a cookie.
Do I Want it?
The acceleration-obsessed may yet spring for the 5.7-liter Hemi engine, which also makes The diesel's greatest sin is that it might wipe away all justification of the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, with a mere 20% of Ram buyers opting for it.
The real question is, of course, why it took this long for someone -- anyone -- to put a diesel inside the most popular truck segment in America. It's not a question of why it came to be, but why it took this long.
We may yet offer another perspective. At a ranch in dusty Westlake Village, the Ram people allowed us to drive the 1985 Dodge Ram prototype mule -- the first to ever hold a Cummins diesel engine, the developmental car, restored lovingly by Cummins. The prototype that sparked the modern diesel engine revolution! Now here was a real truck: it shook, it rattled, it changed directions via a cross-shaped steering wheel merely as a suggestion, it sounded like every school bus from childhood, replicated dissonantly in thin sheetmetal and velour bench seats. Manly stuff, of course -- it was exactly the sort of truck remembered by the men who now work at Ram as engineers and product planners and communications guys, men who remember childhoods spent in 426 Hemi Challengers, or on rolling farmland surrounded by New Holland tractors, or storming through the desert on Hemi-powered sand rails.
We've come a long way. The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, with the airbag suspension, doesn't drive like a pick-em-up as it does a representation of American luxury...

Nissan Rogue adds third row for 2014
|
Nissan unveiled the grown-up-looking Rogue SUV at the Frankfurt motor show on Tuesday. The second-best-selling vehicle in Nissan's lineup will sticker for $23,350 when it goes on sale in November. Every Rogue will come with Nissan's 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine making 170 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque. The company's continuously variable transmission is also standard, as are four-wheel disc brakes. Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is optional. The Rogue rides on the jointly developed Nissan/Renault Common Module Family platform architecture, scheduled to be offered in 190 countries. "There is growing demand for compact SUVs around the world due to their user-friendly combination of right-sized exteriors, flexible interior utility and low environmental impact," said Fred Diaz, divisional vice president of sales and marketing, Nissan North America. "By sharing development costs, while adapting powertrains, designs and equipment offerings for each specific region, Nissan has been able to add features and technologies while keeping prices affordable." For 2014 the Rogue will offer three-row, seven-passenger seating as well as the "Divide and Hide" cargo system that provides 18 different variations between cargo and passenger space. Optional extras include navigation, Nissan's Around View monitor, blind-spot warning, lane-departure warning and forward-collision warning. Fuel economy is rated at 33 mph highway for front-wheel drive models, which is an 18 percent improvement over last year. The base all-wheel-drive Rogue costs $24,700, and the most expensive model will sticker for $30,280. |

Jason Lane, Auto Body Collision Technichian 
Jason Lane is one of our Auto Body Collision Technicians at Dick Scott Collision, Fowlerville, MI. He graduated from Webberville High School and attended Lansing Community College and now lives in Webberville, MI. He has been in the Automotive Industry for 3 years, and has been with Dick Scott for 3 years. His favorite part of his job is his great co-workers.
In his free time Jason enjoys downhill skiing and rock wall climbing. His favorite food is a Bacon Cheeseburger and his favorite movie is Avatar.
Jason currently drives a Ford Mustang but dreams of someday owning a McLaren MP4-12C!

Recipe Of The Month!

 | | Jalapeno Popper Dip |
What You Need
2 - 8 oz. pkg cream cheese, softened
1 c mayonnaise
1 (4oz) can diced green chilies (drained)
1 (4oz) can diced jalapeno peppers (drained) (I diced fresh pepper for this)
1 c grated parmesan
Make It
Mix cream cheese & mayonnaise in large bowl until smooth. Stir in green chilies & 1/2 jalapeno pepper can (2 oz.).
Spread into oven safe baking dish.
Sprinkle top with fresh grated parmesan cheese.
Bake 350º for 30 minutes.
