THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Make that "running" in the rain, John

Steve Ware didn't show up today even though he had TFTD duty (that "cha-ching" you just heard was Sgt-With-Arms Dennis Kurimai firing up the fine bucket), so John Fazel stepped in with an observation about how attitude can make all the difference.  We aren't sure if this was inspired by Gene Kelly or uttered by Gene Kelly, but, regardless, we were advised: "Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass; it is about dancing in the rain."

BIRTHDAYS, ANNIVERSARIES, AND OTHER MISCELLANEOUS GOODIES

Everybody's got to be someplace, eh Dan?

Dan Herbert was out of the country for his wedding anniversary, for which he was deeply disappointed.  Now word on whether Annette was disappointed or relieved.  Dan also had his Join-the-Club anniversary.  Rumor has it he was not out of the country when he was inducted.

Ken Kosich spent his birthday at Clear Lake working around the Kosich retreat.

Buddy Burke was called out for having a wedding anniversary.  He called back that his wedding

You won that one Buddy

anniversary is the same day as his birthday and that he was fairly certain that he had not celebrated a birthday recently.  He and Mark Larks, purveyor of B&A misery, compromised and decided it must have been Buddy's Join-the-Club anniversary, which caused the reason for, but not the amount of, his "donation" to the cause.

Mark Larks had a Club Anniversary.  Oddly enough, in Mark's case, there was no question as to the type of anniversary for which he was facing the proverbial music.

Skip McCowan had a birthday, participated in a golf tournament in which he won the "closest to

Ever the gentleman, Skip

the hole" prize and was honored at big-time confab in New York, the last of these being the reason for his absence at our Motorama Gala, the first fund raiser he has missed in his umpty-ump years as a Lamorinda Sunrise Rotarian.  He made a generous contribution to our Endowment fund to make up for all these transgressions.

David Furtado was pictured on the front page of the Lamorinda Weekly, for which proud papa Ernie was duly "recognized."

Finally, Dan Herbert let it be known that Katie Rose Ware is a veritable rowing machine, winning gold for the Oakland Strokes rowing club (which also happened to kick some serious booty at the National Championships).  That second "cha-ching" you just heard is Sgt. Kurimai's fine bucket revving into overdrive, the better to doubly lighten Steve's wallet next week.

MOTORAMA, PHASE I, IS IN THE BOOKS

Outstanding, Dave!

The Gala event last weekend has come and gone, and what a great event it was.  Kudos to all Lamorinda Sunrisers and kin who made it such a fun and successful shindig.  Extra-Super-Duper Special kudos to Krysten Laine, Claire Roberts, Dave Isenberg and Grand High Poobah Nancy Baglietto for their hard work without which (a) we would not have had an event and (b) Soon-to-be-Imperial Potentate Hays Englehart would have a do-good budget of $1.74 next year.

MOTORAMA PHASE II IS RAPIDLY APPROACHING

While the Laine/Lane twins (Krysten and Chris, respectively) are busily getting the Motorama/World of Wheels show planned, Rich Shearer announced that volunteers are needed for all manner of stuff to help with planning and executing on the day of the event (which is Father's Day, June 16).  Sign-up sheets will start going around at our next meeting, and there are plenty of tasks to go around.  So please - no, pretty please with sugar or the libation of your choice on top - sign up to help out.

Gary does it again!

And as an example of "out of the box" thinking - actually, in this case, it's more like "in the box" thinking - Gary Fulcher, famed for his Man Cave and the length of time he spent as a red badger, has come up with a great idea for raising a bit o' cash at the event.  The idea is to have ballot boxes at which visitors can cast their votes for their favorite vehicles on display by means of inserting cash or cash equivalents (like tickets sold for the purpose).  Gary even had a prototype ballot box on display at the meeting.

In a similar vein, Dennis Kurimai came up with the idea of having a carwash with the labor provided, and proceeds split with, Interact Clubs, cheerleaders, or some such.   Exact details are still being worked out.

With this kind of ingenuity, how can this event fail?  Only one way - by people not volunteering to help out.  (See what I did there?  How's that for hint about as subtle as a train wreck?)

WHY WOULD ANYONE ROB ROY?

Image models by Christy Arnold

"Rob-Roy," for those who have not been paying attention, is the latest Club project at Gary Fulcher's shop.  "Tippy" the Canoe was a roaring success a couple years ago, and "Rob-Roy" promises to be an even bigger success, what with its ability to be propelled by paddles or by sail.  Yes, it will have a mast that can be raised, along with an appropriate sail, to make it twice the fun (especially running downwind).

Ron Brown rose to give us an update on "Rob-Roy's" progress (going great) and to let us know about the plans for marketing the raffle tickets that we will sell to raise money for the Club's do-good coffers, which, after all, is the ultimate point of the endeavor.  (Yes, there is occasionally a point to what we do.)  The not-quite complete "Rob-Roy" will be on display at Motorama.  But this time, says Ron, we are looking for additional joint marketing efforts, with some of the proceeds going to any and all groups that want to embark on a joint marketing gig.  Currently on the horizon is displaying this fine vessel (and selling raffle tickets) at the Scottish Games at the Alameda County Fairgrounds is Pleasanton over the Labor Day weekend, at the Pittsburg Seafood Festival and at the Lafayette Art & Wine Festival.  Here's to guessing that other venues will be added to the list.

Stay tuned, Ron will be updating us, and looking for volunteers to help sell raffle tickets and man these events, in the not-too-distant future.

THIS IS WAY TOO MUCH FUN FOR YOU NOT TO BE THERE

Mr. "Fossil" won the Baby Prize Last year!

The Annual Three-Quarter Century Club Luncheon is coming to an Orinda Community Church near you on Wednesday, June 19.  This labor of love of John Fazel welcomes any Orinda resident aged 75 or over to enjoy a lovely lunch, award prizes to the oldest man and woman, the "baby" (the youngest who is 75 or better) and the longest married couple.  The guests will also enjoy a talk given by District 5160's own Past District Governor Candy Pierce.

We will need volunteers to help prepare the meal (meaning we cut up a bunch of whole pre-cooked chickens, mix up some salad and prepare a big ol' pot of rice), serve the meal and clean up afterwards.  It's easier than it sounds, the volunteers have a bunch of fun, and the response from the guests is great.  And yes, you get to eat, too.

And if that isn't incentive enough, this is the one time each year when you can see John in a tuxedo and (here's the real shocker) closed-toe shoes.

So mark your calendars and contact John Fazel for more details.
