THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Mark, his best non-compromising look

Mark Roberts gave us some wisdom from Margaret Thatcher (to be read with the proper British accent): "If you just set out to be liked, you would be prepared to compromise on anything at any time and you would achieve nothing."

VISITING ROTARIANS

Steve Lack, Pleasant Hill and District Governor-Elect, here to see if the truth about us is as bad as the rumors. (Here's a hint, Steve: the truth is much, much worse.)

GUESTS OF OTHER PERSUASIONS

None.  Nada. Zip.

BIRTHDAYS, ANNIVERSARIES, AND OTHER MISCELLANEOUS GOODIES

Chuck Bove took Stacy to Sasa for dinner for her birthday and forked over an extra $20 for the privilege.  Alex Arnold had a Club anniversary - ditto on the 20-spot.  Same for Hays Englehart taking Regina to Silverado for her birthday.

MEMORIES OF JOANNE

joanne 3-13
Joanne, always a regal lady

Past-President, Past Rotarian of the Year, and shining example for us all, Joanne Luscher passed away.  George Chaffey gave a short presentation that nicely captured her spirit and contributions.

Joanne was a true Rotarian, willing to pitch in and help in a million different ways, large and small, locally and half way around the world.  Without her, that bridge in Tanzania uniting two halves of a village that has a plaque with our Club's name on it would only be a fuzzy, half-remembered dream.  She was our Club's Centennial President.  She was the coordinator and counselor for many of our Club's incoming Youth Exchange Students. She came up with more different ways to say "TGITLFOTM" than any other Club member, before or since.

But most of all, she was our friend.  Goodbye, Joanne. We love you and miss you.

LACY J DALTON IS COMING TO THE FREIGHT & SALVAGE MAY 2

The Freight & Salvage is in Berkeley.  Lacy J Dalton is a great performer who also does Rotary gigs.  President Mark has tickets.  That is all.

FOUR-WAY TEST SPEECH CONTEST, DEAD AHEAD

At next week's meeting, to be precise.  High school students will wow us with excellent forensic speaking skills.  Be there and be prepared to be impressed.

YOU SHOULD DO THIS EVERY MONTH ANYWAY, BUT  ESPECIALLY THIS MONTH

Reading the Rotarian Magazine is a great way to learn more about the world of Rotary. (That is only one way in which it differs from The Lamorindan.) This month's issue has two extra-special reasons to read it.  First is an inspirational story of women literally risking their lives to get polio vaccine to kids who need it as part of Rotary

Gov Laura and Pancho, working together...at LSR!

International's signature Polio Plus polio eradication efforts.  Second, and closer to home, District 5160's own Cecil "Pancho" Padilla is featured in this month's installment of "Rotary Stories."  His is a wonderful tale of how joining Rotary in Placerville at the request of his boss at PG&E has led to 30 years of Rotary, including Rotary trips to 70 countries.  Pancho was here this past fall when DG Laura Day came to visit, so most of us have had a chance to meet this modest man.  It's a wonderful and inspiring story.

DISTRICT SUMMIT, DEAD AHEAD

Past Gov Chaffey, Gov Elect Lack, having a good time

This year's District Summit (aka the District Assembly) is coming next Saturday, May 4, 8:30-1:30 in Vallejo.  Thus sayeth incoming District Governor Steve Lack.  This is a great opportunity to meet other District 5160 Rotarians and learn more about how Rotary works.  Prez-to-be Hays Englehart has sent out an e-mail about this, including a link to the on-line sign-up, and is organizing a car pool from Celia's, so contact him for more info.

TRUTH IN ADVERTISING, LAMORINDA SUNRISE STYLE

DGE Lack also let the cat out of the bag as to the proper pronunciation of John Fazel's last name.  All these years, John had us

Will the real Fazel/Fossil please stand up?

believing it was pronounced FAY-zul.  But now, thanks to His Governorship, we know it is properly pronounced "fossil," like the ancient dead things we find in rocks. The secret's out, John.

SPEAKING OF WHICH . . .

John Fazel took the opportunity to announce that this year's Three-Quarter Century Club Luncheon will take place June 19.  Insert your own inappropriate "fossil" joke here.

HOWZAT FOR THE ROTARY SPIRIT?

Spike & Linda, all heart!

Spike "You Mean My Name is Really John?" Speicher not only Exposed Himself today (more on that eventually), but he and Linda are hosting this month's TGITLFOTM.  This would not be so remarkable except that he and Linda moved two weeks ago.  The scramble to find alternative digs came to naught, so Spike begged, Linda relented, and the show will go on.  Actually, it will have gone on by the time you see this blurb, and a splendid time will have been had by all.  Thanks, Spike, and merci beaucoup, Linda, for letting the barbarians at the gate come in and set a spell.
