FOR BOOKWORMS

From Bob Riegg, apparently quoting himself: "Life's a really big book, but if you haven't traveled, you've only read the first page."

Staying home for awhile Bob?

GUESTS

Rotarians: Apparently they were avoiding us like the plague, it being Club Assembly

Other Persuasions: See above.

WHAT WOULD THIS CLUB BE LIKE IF THEY HADN'T JOINED?

Don's been everywhere, done that!

Don Reichert, as of March 25th, hit his membership's 25-YEAR mark.  Gwen was supportive enough to have her birthday two days later.

Hays Englehart and Mark Roberts were April Fools almost together.  The president-elect joined in 2008, and the beleaguered president in 2009.

TIME FOR DIRECTORS TO SHINE

Hey, this Club Assembly was both impressive and entertaining.

Almost there Mark!

MARK LARKS, Club Service, reported that the first three weeks at Celia's were spent on finding ways to make improvements.  So far it's duct tape for the banners, a flag stand was dug up somewhere on the premises and general cleanup.  In a move toward transparency, an email will go out advising each member where he/she stands on Recognitions (formerly known as fines).  Deftly concealing his relief, Mark said that the transition to the Director for the upcoming administration, Ron Melvin, has begun.

At this point, for some reason (maybe the First Lady's urging), there was digression to the Raffle. A very slim pot after last week's White Ball. Surprising that Charlie Franklin fought so hard to establish his claim, but he couldn't stop Bob Riegg from walking off with the modest prize.

Tippy was spiffy!

RON BROWN, Community Relations, gave a most inspiring Canoe speech.  He described the genesis of Tippy Canoe two years ago, from the modest beginning peddling $20 tickets to shaking 'em down at the Art & Wine Festival for $5,000 in two days. All told, the raffle of Tippy cleared about $20,000. Spike Speicher was specially mentioned for the time he put in on this.  But last year was a mere warm-up for this year's planned event. Mistakes, like turning Tippy over at its launching will not be repeated with this canoe, which will be a river boat, built with solid blocks of dark sapele wood and light ash. A fine but rugged work of art.  It'll be

the same length as Tippy, but will have a full cockpit, front and back decks and can be sailed.  It also has a pedigree - it's modeled after a canoe built by the Scotsman John MacGregor, no less than Rob Roy McGregor's grandson (known as the Robin Hood of Scotland) in 1865. John MacGregor named the canoe after his grandfather and sailed it, or a number of replicas, over 1,000 miles of rivers in Europe. One of his canoes is currently on display at the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth, Cornwall, England. John McGregor also started the Royal Canoe Club of England.

Rob Roy has been honored with a book, a movie, a drink and now, most of all, by having his name put on this new vessel.  Rob Roy and its raffle tickets will debut at our May 18th Gala, with raffle tickets selling in earnest beginning with the Walnut Creek Art & Wine Festival two weeks later. Many other major event venues are in the planning stage, including, for sure, the Lafayette Arts and Wine Festival, the 143rd Highland Games in Pleasanton and continuing all the way to the big drawing in October at the Reservoir Run.  Needless to say, the key will be to sell, sell, sell.  The sales folks will just have to be able to answer questions about where the $$$ will be going and why (well, maybe a little about Rob Roy as well).  Including other clubs as 20% partners will be part of the fun and will surely add needed sales muscle.  The treasure from this voyage could be 40,000 doubloons.

Krysten is on a roll!

KRYSTEN LAINE, Motorama, reported that good things are happening.  Such things as Skip McCowan's prize of four Giants tickets, Steve and Katie Ware coordinating volunteers, the concept of one host per table, and a prize of a limo to Livermore winery.  5,000 Save The Day cards have been sent, including to 400 of our designated guests.  Computers and registrations are working.  Participants include two car-racing teams, a father/son building a car, the Acalanes HS shop teacher, an Offload Baja Beast, a Baja motorcycle, and more.  The Big Event will be June 16th on Golden Gate Way in Lafayette from about 9:00 to 4:00.

THE VERY SAME KRYSTEN LAINE, Gala, filling in for Nancy Baglietto, said volunteers will be needed, Dave Isenberg put together the menu this past week, and "The Ringer" is coming back. The Big Event will be May 18th, despite Cameron Shearer's simultaneous graduation.

Cal, Krysten and Paul Harris are all grins!

THE VERY SAME KRYSTEN LAINE, in another digression, received another Paul Harris pin from Cal Lee, proving once again that she is a star both locally and internationally.

GILLETT JOHNSON, International, was MIA.  He did reveal that maybe it's time to change the weekly speaker's honorarium from an LN-4 hand to something else.

Master delegator at work

WALTER NELSON, Membership, made everyone stand, which was his way of showing the entire membership committee.  Behind-the-scenes, folks rating special mention, however, were those who get new members set up:   Claire Roberts, Thomas Peeks, Brad Davis, George Chaffey, and Chuck Yeager.  In fact, Walter is an expert delegator - he managed to arrive late at a Starbucks confab where Claire successfully vetted a new member in his absence.  We are at +3 members for the year, as compared with the goal of +1.

Even Prez Mark cracks up when Buddy speaks

BUDDY BURKE, Programs, had just three things to say, believe it or not.  First, he appreciates evaluation of programs, even just a rating of one to 10.  Second, he's working on a TGITLFOTM at the Cal Shakes Theater in August, which would be a great place to peddle Rob Roy.  Third, he is proposing a first generation college scholarship program, about which emails have been sent and input is needed.

THOMAS PEEKS, Presidential Advisor, thinks everything's cool.

HAYS ENGLEHART, President Elect, talked up the District Assembly on May 4th in Vallejo, from 8:00 a.m  to 1:00 p.m.  He'll email.  All are invited. It's a great way for new Rotarians to learn about all that stuff.

Sorry Mark, Can't beat District Gov!

MARK ROBERTS, Foundation pro tem, said that we've slipped to #2 in District per capita for Paul Harris (#1 being San Ramon, the club of our District Governor) and that said Governor would like $123,000 by the end of the year, please, to make a $500,000 District goal.  After that, Don Jenkins and Cal Lee, cowering in the crowd, had nothing to say.

OTHER COMMENTS

DAVID WAAL has been advocating Habitat for Humanity, but wonders whether the timing is good when it is in the middle of marketing Rob Roy.  The prez said we should have the ability to do both.

The prez reminded us that April 27th is Rotarians At Work Day.  Possibilities are rebuilding a deck in Martinez, or two painting projects at Las Trampas.

Mark also said that the global grant application for the Tanzania water project, presented by Walt Schafer last week, has been approved.  We're the only local club to participate.

Come on Brad...we love fund-raisers!

Brad Davis, representing Paul Bettelheim as head of the Endowment, reminded us that 3/4 of what we raise goes into funding our projects, and 1/4 is kept in the Endowment, which is currently at about $130,000.  He's hoping we get to $300,000 soon so we won't have to do fundraisers.

Brad, representing himself, announced that Belinda and Joe of the Garden Park Homework Club will be our speakers next week.  The Homework Club now operates at Lakeside Village, with 175 units.  The results have been fabulous in taking students from detentions at the principal's office to academic honors.

Krysten Laine once again one-upped everyone.  Not only did she visit the surgical museum in Chicago last week to see the big room devoted to Rotary's Polio Plus, but someone spotted the pin she was wearing and after a conversation promised to join Rotary.  Good stuff!
