The Truth Behind Mercury Retrograde
Two days ago Mercury went retrograde.
One of the first things people hear about when they begin learning astrology is Mercury Retrograde. Like a few other zodiac features (the sign of Scorpio and the planet Saturn, for example) Mercury Retrograde usually gets a bad rap. It's as if these particular astrology characters had bad press agents who blew their public relations. Mercury Retrograde ends up getting blamed for cars breaking down, communication blocks, perhaps even one day the end of western civilization will be made the fault of this little planetary bugger.
The soul-level side of Mercury Retrograde, however, reveals a different story. First of all, the science behind any planet going retrograde is not that that planet begins to move backwards, but that from our vantage point here on earth, our motion appears to overtake the other planet's motion in our orbits around the sun. It's similar to two trains leaving a station on adjacent tracks, when one overtakes the other and the other, though continuing forward, appears to be moving backwards.
In Star Genesis, the kind of astrology I use, whenever a planet goes retrograde, its forces go underground. Instead of being freed and released, they turn undercover and subtle. Mercury, or Hermes, was the only Greek god permitted to travel at will between Mt. Olympus, the home of the gods, and earth, where mortals dwell. Mercury in astrology is the force that connects us to each other, and that connects all things. When the field of connection turns retrograde, it's like trying to go to a party when each step you make to get ready, go out the door, start your car, drive to the right address, gets inhibited by a deeper need
to connect with yourself. The need to reestablish communications with yourself is the key meaning of Mercury Retrograde.
The great Austrian seer Rudolf Steiner used to schedule his most important social events on Mercury Retrograde. When an astrologer asked him why, knowing astrology, he would do such a thing as contradict the planetary forces like that, Steiner replied, "If our group doesn't turn around these retrograde energies who will?" He was making the point that human beings are not passive victims of the stars but co-creators with them. The very same forces that would gather to stop you can start you if you're willing to treat them that way, and dig down into your soul to muster up a powerful response. Between now and November 26 with Mercury Retrograde you can put this to test: any time it seems to you that things are breaking down, rather than blaming it on Mercury, try diverting your energies to the inner undercover track and see if some message of the soul comes through.
