Services and Advocacy for Colorado's LGBT Elders

Ready, set, go!

I am so looking forward to what 2016 will bring us. For many it's a time for new or renewed resolutions for others it's an opportunity just waiting to happen. Whether it's sharing a meal, dancing, playing games, traveling or whatever it may be that makes you happy, SAGE of the Rockies invites you to participate in one of the many special events we have planned for you and are always open to suggestions and new ideas.

During the next few weeks, we will be planning for the Annual Tea Dance, a fundraiser for SAGE of the Rockies and later on we will be forming a SAGE committee for PrideFest 2016. In the fall, we are excited to hold the first SAGE of the Rockies Homecoming Dance, a benefit dinner and dance party that will certainly become the talk of the town.

On behalf of Johanna, Christine, DeAndra and myself, we wish you all a fabulous New Year!!

- Reynaldo Mireles
SAGE of the Rockies Program Manager
The Center will be closed on Monday, January 18 in observation of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Farewell -Vicente Reyes Martinez

Vicente, 63, of Pueblo, was a volunteer at The Center/SAGE of the Rockies program last year and a friend to many in our community.  He was a very caring, gentle, and loving person.  We were saddened to hear of his untimely death on January 5. Our thoughts are with Tom Carrigan his husband of 35 years, his family and his many friends. Vince will always be remembered for his great sense of humor and deep love of family.

SAGE Story -Glen Wagner

Glenn was born in 1959 and has lived in CO for most of his life and calls himself a reluctant native.  He served in the Army National Guard and was honorably discharged.  Glenn has been coming to The Center since 2002 when he first came out and had volunteered at the front desk for many years.  He especially enjoys the activities surrounding Pride Fest and the Tuesday men's coffee group.  Although he isn't able to attend every Tuesday, he knows he has friends waiting to hear how he's been doing.

One of the most memorable moments in his life was when he met his husband and soulmate Larry at the coffee group.  They held their engagement party at The Center among their friends from the men's coffee group and they got married in March 2015 with over 100 guests attending to share in their joy.  Glenn says he truly enjoys being at The Center because he can be around other gay people with similar interests. Glenn and Larry enjoy their time together touring Colorado on their Shadow Spirit motorcycle.

"Glen and Larry were meant for each other.  They are an inspiration to many who believe true love can happen at any age." - Reynaldo.

Alzheimer's Association Education Seminars

SAGE of the Rockies invites you to the upcoming seminars being sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association.  Whether you have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's, are caring for someone who has, or want to be better informed about the impact of Alzheimer's in our community we hope you can attend.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION: UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA RELATED BEHAVIORS
Date:  Wednesday, January 27
Time:  10:00 am to 12:00 pm
Place:  The Center, 1301 E Colfax Avenue

Behavior is a powerful form of communication and is one of the primary ways for people with dementia to communicate their needs and feelings as the ability to use language is lost. However, some behaviors can present real challenges for caregivers to manage. Join us to learn to decode behavioral messages, identify common behavior triggers, and learn strategies to help intervene with some of the most common behavioral challenges of Alzheimer's disease.  Please register by calling 800-272-3900.

SAGE Highlights 2015:

On November 10, SAGE of the Rockies held its 2nd Annual Veteran's Day celebration at The Center.  Special guest Christopher Leach, Veteran and Finance Committee Chair of The Center's Board of Directors, shared his personal story while serving under DADT (don't ask/don't tell) and Lori Leah Monet, Veteran and Performer at Dazzle Jazz shared music from various war eras.

On December 11, SAGE of the Rockies held its 1st Annual Holiday Gathering at Dazzle Restaurant. We had a wonderful time sharing our holiday cheer with community members from various SAGE activities.  It was a huge surprise to have received two $50 gift certificates and a generous donation from Donald Rossa, Dazzle owner for our SAGE program.
