The Texts this Weekend

This weekend is Palm Sunday. The readings include Psalm 31:9-16; Psalm 116:1-2, 12-19; Psalm 22:1-2 and Mark 11:1-11:

When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples and said to them, "Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it. If anyone says to you, 'Why are you doing this?' just say this, 'The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately.'"

They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they were untying it, some of the bystanders said to them, "What are you doing, untying the colt?" They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it. Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting,

"Hosanna!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!
Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!"

Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple; and when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

Worship Renewal

The response to our 2016 Worship Renewal project has been wonderful, and we extend a warm "Thank you!" to everyone who has given a gift to help replace worn out hymnals, choir robes and paraments. The new hymnals will be in the pews, ready for Easter!

We are still receiving gifts, and you can still dedicate a hymnal in honor or memory of someone special. Let us know your dedication and it will be printed on a special bookplate on the inside cover of a hymnal.

Funds raised during the Worship Renewal 2016 appeal will also allow us to upgrade some technology in the Sanctuary, allowing us to make worship services available through on-demand web streaming.

You can mail in your gift in the green Worship Renewal envelope, or bring it to church for the offering plate. You can also support this effort with a special online gift.

Women's Retreat - April 8-10

For years, women have asked for the grown-up version of Soul Sisterhood. Ladies, here it is! Amanda Berger, director of Soul Sisterhood, will lead us through a weekend of exploration and creativity as we discover what it means to be rooted in God's presence. This year's women's retreat will take place Friday evening, April 8, through Sunday noon, April 10 at Christ the King Retreat Center in Buffalo, Minn.

Through our devotional time, conversation, and mixed-media painting, we'll unearth more about who we are created to be and who God is in our lives. Mixed media is the perfect medium to explore the messiness of life through which God causes our lives to blossom. The time you spend creating your masterpiece will allow you to reflect on how God is nurturing you right now. Official start time is 8 p.m., but you are welcome to join us any time after 4 p.m. on Friday.

Register online at spdlc.churchcenteronline.com. Please contact Pastor Valerie for more information at vstrand@spdlc.org.

Servers should plan to wear black pants with an all white or all black collared shirt. Contact Connie Blanchard at connie.blanchard@blanchardscatering.com.

In you, O Lord, I seek refuge;

do not let me ever be put to shame; in your righteousness deliver me.

Incline your ear to me; rescue me speedily.

Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me.

You are indeed my rock and my fortress; for your name's sake lead me and guide me,

take me out of the net that is hidden for me, for you are my refuge.

Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.

You hate those who pay regard to worthless idols, but I trust in the Lord.

I will exult and rejoice in your steadfast love, because you have seen my affliction; you have taken heed of my adversities,

and have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy; you have set my feet in a broad place.

Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am in distress; my eye wastes away from grief, my soul and body also.

For my life is spent with sorrow, and my years with sighing;

my strength fails because of my misery, and my bones waste away.

I am the scorn of all my adversaries, a horror to my neighbors,

an object of dread to my acquaintances; those who see me in the street flee from me.

I have passed out of mind like one who is dead; I have become like a broken vessel.

For I hear the whispering of many -- terror all around! --

as they scheme together against me, as they plot to take my life.

But I trust in you, O Lord; I say, "You are my God."

My times are in your hand; deliver me from the hand of my enemies and persecutors.

Let your face shine upon your servant; save me in your steadfast love.

- Psalm 31:9-16
For Reflection

"Let the mouth also fast from disgraceful speeches and railings. For what does it profit if we abstain from fish and fowl and yet bite and devour our brothers and sisters? The evil speaker eats the flesh of his brother and bites the body of his neighbor."
- John Chrysostom

What's the Best Way to Discipline?

The bottom line: It is on the strength of my connected relationships with my children that disciplinary or corrective measures gain power and effectiveness.

Lord's Prayer in Yoga

I have had the honor of praying the Lord's Prayer dozens of times with SPD lay ministers and home bound members of our congregation during communion or on a friendly visit. I am struck and humbled every time to be a part of this sacred experience. A visited friend who may be agitated, frustrated or seemingly uncomprehending, becomes quiet and peaceful. In those who seemed unable to communicate, their eyes become enlivened, they may squeeze my hand or sit up straight in their special wheel chair. I feel the love and peace of the Spirit in these humble places during the praying of the Lord's Prayer.

How many languages has the Lord's Prayer been prayed in since Christ taught his disciples this beautiful, comprehensive prayer over 2000 years ago? As we look forward to Holy Week and Easter services, I wonder how many times this beautiful,  sacred prayer will be prayed by the millions of Christians celebrating Easter around the globe? What a lovely wonder that is, millions of Christians united in the Prayer of our Lord as we celebrate his victory over death.

The Lord's Payer was shared at a meeting of The Conversation earlier this month in yet another language, the language of the human body in the discipline of yoga. Please pray the Lord's Prayer along with my friend Carole as she prays the Lord's Prayer through yoga movements in this video.

Blessings,
