The Texts this Weekend

This weekend is the Fourth Sunday in Lent. The readings include  Psalm 126 and John 12:1-8:

Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus' feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, "Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?" (He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) Jesus said, "Leave her alone. She bought it so that she might keep it for the day of my burial. You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me."

Easter Chancel Flowers - March 14

You can order flowers to help beautify our chancel during Easter. Choose from Easter lilies, yellow mum plants, pink azaleas, blue hydrangeas, pink hydrangeas or pink calla lilies. The deadline to order flowers is Monday, March 14. Order yours online!
Book Club - March 15

The Book Club invites you to enjoy a most engaging read, My Name is Asher Lev, by Chaim Potok. Asher Lev grows up in a cloistered Hasidic community in postwar Brooklyn, a world suffused by ritual and revolving around a charismatic Rebbe. Asher Lev is an artist who is compulsively driven to render the world he sees and feels even when it leads him to blasphemy. But in time his gift threatens to estrange him from that world and the parents he adores. As it follows his struggle, My Name Is Asher Lev becomes a luminous portrait of the artist, by turns heartbreaking and exultant, a modern classic.

Join us for a discussion led by Amanda Berger on Tuesday, March 15 at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome! Copies of this book are available at the information desk in the Atrium for $10.
Lily Pad Story Time - March 16

Bring your little one to Story Time in the Lily Pad Library on Wednesday, March 16 at 10 a.m. A special guest will read their favorite story to the children, and there will be a special music surprise! Contact Liz Nelson at [email protected] for more information.
High School Bowling Night - March 19

The annual High School bowling outing is on for Saturday, March 19 at 6:30 p.m.! The Big Bowlski will include the tournament and loads of pizza, fun and fellowship. Double check your calendar, and don't miss this awesome event! Register online.
Exciting Easter Event - March 26

Join us for a fun family morning, as we celebrate the coming of Easter. We'll have a light breakfast, hear the Easter story, and join in a huge egg hunt! Saturday, March 26 at 10 a.m. No cost, but please register online by March 23.
Easter Food Baskets - March 26

We will be donating Easter Food Baskets to 500 families served by our sister congregation, Messiah Lutheran Church, located in the Phillips neighborhood. $50 is a suggested amount; however a gift of any size is greatly appreciated. Use a pew envelope and note Easter Baskets on both the envelope and the memo line of the check. You may also give a gift through on-line giving.
Worship Renewal

This week members will receive a letter inviting support for our 2016 Worship Renewal project. As hymnals, choir robes and paraments have become worn over the years, we have been receiving special donations to cover the replacement of these important worship items.

Your gift to replace a hymnal can be dedicated in honor or memory of someone special. Let us know your dedication and it will be printed on a special bookplate on the inside cover of the hymnal.

This appeal will also allow us to upgrade some technology in the Sanctuary, allowing us to make worship services available through on-demand web streaming.

You can mail in your gift in the green Worship Renewal envelope, or bring it to church for the offering plate. You can also support this effort with a special online gift.

Learn more about Worship Renewal at St. Philip the Deacon.
DivorceCare for Women - April 5

We will have a short, six-week course of DivorceCare for women starting on Tuesday, April 5, from 6:30-8 p.m. The group will decide together the topics from the DivorceCare program, other issues, or guest speakers. All are welcome, whether you are new to DivorceCare or have attended a previous course. Facilitated by SPD member Heather Wright. Contact Pastor Strand Patterson if you would like to attend.
Men's Chorus - April 6, 9, 10

The SPD Men's Chorus will be singing for worship on Sunday, April 10 at the 8:30 and 9:45 a.m. services. There will be 2 rehearsals: Wednesday, April 6 from 7:00-7:45 p.m., and Saturday, April 9 from 10-11 a.m. We have a great time every year singing together, so come, sing and have a great time with the men of SPD! Contact Linda Armstrong at 763-475-7142 or [email protected].
Women's Retreat - April 8-10

For years, women have asked for the grown-up version of Soul Sisterhood. Ladies, here it is! Amanda Berger, director of Soul Sisterhood, will lead us through a weekend of exploration and creativity as we discover what it means to be rooted in God's presence. This year's women's retreat will take place Friday evening, April 8, through Sunday noon, April 10 at Christ the King Retreat Center in Buffalo, Minn.

Through our devotional time, conversation, and mixed-media painting, we'll unearth more about who we are created to be and who God is in our lives. Mixed media is the perfect medium to explore the messiness of life through which God causes our lives to blossom. The time you spend creating your masterpiece will allow you to reflect on how God is nurturing you right now. Official start time is 8 p.m., but you are welcome to join us any time after 4 p.m. on Friday.

Register online at spdlc.churchcenteronline.com. Please contact Pastor Valerie for more information at [email protected].

When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,

we were like those who dream.

Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy;

then it was said among the nations, 'The Lord has done great things for them.'

The Lord has done great things for us, and we rejoiced.

Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like the water courses in the Negeb.

May those who sow in tears reap with shouts of joy.

Those who go out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing,

shall come home with shouts of joy, carrying their sheaves.

- Psalm 126
For Reflection

"No act of virtue can be great if it is not followed by advantage for others. So, no matter how much time you spend fasting, no matter how much you sleep on a hard floor and eat ashes and sigh continually, if you do no good to others, you do nothing great."
- John Chrysostom

The Inspiring Parenting Behind the World's Greatest Inventor

As a child, Thomas Edison was seen as a difficult child. He had a learning disability (dyslexia). His strict teachers didn't understand why he couldn't memorize and recite his lessons like the other children, and referred to young Tom as "addled" -- a catch-all term at the time to mean that he was mentally incapable. This caused Tom to storm out of class one day, heading home to his mother...

Kindness Part 5: Kindness is Contagious!

Sometimes being contagious can be a positive instead of a negative. The ripple effect of being kind is said to spread to 3 degrees of separation (your friend's friend's friend). Wow! By you being kind to one person your effect can ripple out like the ripples of a pebble in your pond, touching many others lives without your direct knowledge.

Kindness is contagious, according to a study done by researchers at University of California, Los Angeles, and University of Cambridge and University of Plymouth in the United Kingdom. When we see someone else help another person it gives us a good feeling, which in turn causes us to go out and do something altruistic ourselves. This is the first time a study actually scientifically documented this effect.

"When you feel this sense of moral 'elevation' not only do you say you want to be a better person and help others," said Simone Schnall, of Cambridge, the lead researcher, "but you actually do when the opportunity presents itself."

What if we saw more stories about kindness in the news media? Would that mean more people being exposed to acts of kindness would be more likely to perform altruistic acts?

We have science to back what Jesus has been telling us all along" Love one another. Or, as in Ephesians 4:32: "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you."

Or as in 1 John 3:18: "Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth."

Kindness matters; it can bring you joy. But we are kind because it is the right thing to do from our heart. It is what Jesus asked us to do. A kind act witnessed spreads kindness and inspires altruism. Even an unseen, unproclaimed act of kindness brings joy to the world. Be that pebble in the pond that begins the ripple effect of kindness, and add some joy to the world. Be contagious with kindness, be healthier, be happier, experience better relationships, live longer, be like Christ.

Blessings and Kindness,
