The Texts this Weekend

This weekend is the Fourth Sunday in Lent. The readings include 2 Corinthians 5:16-21 and Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32:

Now all the tax-collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, "This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them." So he told them this parable:

There was a man who had two sons. The younger of them said to his father, "Father, give me the share of the property that will belong to me." So he divided his property between them. A few days later the younger son gathered all he had and traveled to a distant country, and there he squandered his property in dissolute living. When he had spent everything, a severe famine took place throughout that country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed the pigs. He would gladly have filled himself with the pods that the pigs were eating; and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said, "How many of my father's hired hands have bread enough and to spare, but here I am dying of hunger! I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me like one of your hired hands.' "

So he set off and went to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him. Then the son said to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son." But the father said to his slaves, "Quickly, bring out a robe-the best one-and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. And get the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found!" And they began to celebrate.

Now his elder son was in the field; and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing. He called one of the slaves and asked what was going on. He replied, "Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has got him back safe and sound." Then he became angry and refused to go in. His father came out and began to plead with him. But he answered his father, "Listen! For all these years I have been working like a slave for you, and I have never disobeyed your command; yet you have never given me even a young goat so that I might celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours came back, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fatted calf for him!" Then the father said to him, "Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life; he was lost and has been found."

Book Club - March 15

The Book Club invites you to enjoy a most engaging read, My Name is Asher Lev, by Chaim Potok. Asher Lev grows up in a cloistered Hasidic community in postwar Brooklyn, a world suffused by ritual and revolving around a charismatic Rebbe. Asher Lev is an artist who is compulsively driven to render the world he sees and feels even when it leads him to blasphemy. But in time his gift threatens to estrange him from that world and the parents he adores. As it follows his struggle, My Name Is Asher Lev becomes a luminous portrait of the artist, by turns heartbreaking and exultant, a modern classic.

Join us for a discussion led by Amanda Berger on Tuesday, March 15 at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome! Copies of this book are available at the information desk in the Atrium for $10.

Worship Renewal

This week members will receive a letter inviting support for our 2016 Worship Renewal project. As hymnals, choir robes and paraments have become worn over the years, we have been receiving special donations to cover the replacement of these important worship items.

Your gift to replace a hymnal can be dedicated in honor or memory of someone special. Let us know your dedication and it will be printed on a special bookplate on the inside cover of the hymnal.

This appeal will also allow us to upgrade some technology in the Sanctuary, allowing us to make services available through on-demand web streaming.

You can mail in your gift in the green Worship Renewal envelope, or bring it to church for the offering plate. You can also support this effort with a special online gift.

Women's Retreat - April 8-10

For years, women have asked for the grown-up version of Soul Sisterhood. Ladies, here it is! Amanda Berger, director of Soul Sisterhood, will lead us through a weekend of exploration and creativity as we discover what it means to be rooted in God's presence. This year's women's retreat will take place Friday evening, April 8, through Sunday noon, April 10 at Christ the King Retreat Center in Buffalo, Minn.

Through our devotional time, conversation, and mixed-media painting, we'll unearth more about who we are created to be and who God is in our lives. Mixed media is the perfect medium to explore the messiness of life through which God causes our lives to blossom. The time you spend creating your masterpiece will allow you to reflect on how God is nurturing you right now. Official start time is 8 p.m., but you are welcome to join us any time after 4 p.m. on Friday.

Register online at spdlc.churchcenteronline.com. Please contact Pastor Valerie for more information at vstrand@spdlc.org.

Happy are those

whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

Happy are those to whom the Lord imputes no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.

While I kept silence, my body wasted away through my groaning all day long.

For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer.

Then I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not hide my iniquity;

I said, 'I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,' and you forgave the guilt of my sin.

Therefore let all who are faithful offer prayer to you;

at a time of distress, the rush of mighty waters shall not reach them.

You are a hiding-place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with glad cries of deliverance.

I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.

Do not be like a horse or a mule, without understanding, whose temper must be curbed with bit and bridle, else it will not stay near you.

Many are the torments of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds those who trust in the Lord.

Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart.

- Psalm 32
For Reflection

"Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own sin and not to judge my brother, for You are blessed from all ages to all ages. Amen"
- Ephrem the Syrian

The Parenting Pitfall We All Get Stuck In

There's a parenting pitfall that nearly all parents get stuck in at some point: "If my child behaves well, I am a good parent. If my child misbehaves, I am a bad parent." Stated so bluntly, it's obviously not true, but it is still a powerful and subtle belief for nearly all parents.

Kindness Part 4: Nurturing Relationships

It is obvious that you have better relationships with those you are kind to and with those who are kind to you. We feel more bonded when we are kind to one another. Our ancestors found that their chances of survival increased when there were greater positive bonds in the group and cooperation. The "kindness gene" became an important part of their genetic make up.

When we are kind to each other, as Christ was kind, we strengthen our relationships and establish new ones. Don't you enjoy being with others who are kind? When your goal is to support the highest good of all, you are naturally kind. Kindness flows easily when your deepest goal is to be kind to others.

For one week, treat those around you with kindness, and be kind to yourself as well. Take notice: Is it difficult for you to be kind? Are people kinder to you in response to your positive kindness?

John Gottman and his colleagues at the Gottman Institute have spent much of the last 35 years researching the traits of relationships. Partners who are generous and kind to one another not only grow in their love for one another but also reap the benefits of a satisfying relationship. So the secret to a happy, healthy, lasting partnership seems clear: be kind and generous -- which often also means being understanding and forgiving.

What does kindness look like? A positive, supportive word. Saying, "Thank you," in recognition of a kind act. Leaving a positive encouraging note for someone. Holding open a door. Smiling at a person. Remembering what is special to someone and sharing that with them without being prompted by them. Doing the dishes without being asked. Filling up the gas in the car or washing the car. Changing the baby's diaper, letting your spouse sleep in. What are your favorite acts of kindness? Be kind to yourself and to others.

We contemplate during Lent the greatest act of kindness, Christ's suffering death on the cross. As we grow in our relationship with Christ we become more like him. I pray for your faith and relationship with the Lord to grow over our Lenten and Easter season and kindness becomes a part of who you are in this world.

Love and Kindness,
