The Texts this Weekend

Tomorrow is Christmas Eve. A full schedule of Christmas worship services is printed below. The coming weekend is the First Sunday of Christmas. The readings include: 1 Samuel 2:18-20, 26; Psalm 148; Colossians 3:12-17 and Luke 2:41-52:

Now every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival. When the festival was ended and they started to return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. Assuming that he was in the group of travelers, they went a day's journey. Then they started to look for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, 'Child, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety.' He said to them, 'Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?' But they did not understand what he said to them. Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor.

Praise the Lord!

Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights!

Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his host!

Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars!

Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens!

Let them praise the name of the Lord, for he commanded and they were created.

He established them for ever and ever; he fixed their bounds, which cannot be passed.

Praise the Lord from the earth, you sea monsters and all deeps,

fire and hail, snow and frost, stormy wind fulfilling his command!

Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars!

Wild animals and all cattle, creeping things and flying birds!

Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the earth!

Young men and women alike, old and young together!

Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his glory is above earth and heaven.

He has raised up a horn for his people, praise for all his faithful, for the people of Israel who are close to him.

Praise the Lord!

- Psalm 148

For Reflection

"The function of prayer is not to influence God, but rather to change the nature of the one who prays."

Faithful Parenting

What to Do when Relatives Criticize Your Parenting

You know that you are learning more graceful, wisdom-building ways to parent and you want to stay the course, but you don't know how to respond without sounding disrespectful to your parents. You may even second guess yourself and get harsh or firm in unnatural ways with your kids, just to avoid the criticism. So what can you do?

Decrease Your Holiday Stress!

Why we allow this wondrous, peaceful time of year stress us out is an unfortunate mystery. Stress during the holidays can make you sick!

You may have already read my column on the high incidence of heart attacks and strokes that occur on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. It is difficult, if not impossible to eliminate stress, so it is imperative to learn techniques to deal with the stress in our lives.

Meditation has been around since before Christ was born as a way to reduce stress and order one's thoughts. There are many different forms of meditation; most are intended to quiet your mind, giving it a rest.

The following meditation is simple, and is recommended by Pastor Mathison when your mind needs a little nap.

1. Find a comfortable place to sit.
2. Place your hands in a comfortable position (in your lap or resting on your knees).
3. Close your eyes.
4. Take 3 deep breaths, letting each breath out for about twice as long as you drew it in.
5. Clear you mind.
6. Say in your mind -- not out loud -- "Be Still and Know" repeating it 3 times. Breath normally thorough out the process.
7. Next say, "Be still and," three times.
8. Then say, "Be still", again 3 times, breathing normally.
9. Finally say, "Be" three times.
10. Take 3 deep breaths.
11. Do this 3 times throughout the day: morning, afternoon and evening.

"Be Still and Know That I am God." - Psalm 46:10

We can take comfort in letting go and resting in God to provide help, strength and safety.

Merry Christmas!

Blessing, Health and Peace,
