The Texts this Weekend

This weekend is the Fourth Sunday in Advent. The readings include: Micah 5:2-5a, Psalm 80:1-7, Hebrews 10:5-10 and Luke 1:39-55:

In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord."

And Mary said,

"My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;

For the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name.
His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation.

He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.

He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly;

He has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty.

He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy,
according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants for ever."

Memory Tree

One of the greatest joys at Christmas time is gathering with loved ones. This is difficult when those we have loved are no longer with us to celebrate. It doesn't matter if your loss is recent or some time long ago, loss is loss and Christmas can be sad. This year you are invited to remember a loved one by writing their name on an ornament and placing it on the tree that stands to the right as you enter the worship center. The table next to the tree has everything you will need. Our memory tree will serve as a witness to the saints who have gone before us and to the cloud of witnesses which surrounds us.

The book will be A Deadly Wandering by Matt Richtel, and Book Club readers are urged to read it early, and then share their copy of the book with someone else. Then join us for the discussion on Tuesday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. for a very important discussion, and please invite your friend to join you.

Shepherd of Israel,

Give ear, O you who lead Joseph like a flock!

You who are enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh.

Stir up your might, and come to save us!

Restore us, O God; let your face shine, that we may be saved.

O Lord God of hosts, how long will you be angry with your people's prayers?

You have fed them with the bread of tears, and given them tears to drink in full measure.

You make us the scorn of our neighbours; our enemies laugh among themselves.

Restore us, O God of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved.

- Psalm 80:1-7

For Reflection

"Let gratitude be the pillow upon which you kneel to say your nightly prayer. And let faith be the bridge you build to overcome evil and welcome good."
- Maya Angelou

Faithful Parenting

When My Child Asked for an iPod

My strong parenting belief is that responsibility always comes before freedom. One of my roles as a parent is to help my kids understand this essential reality in life, but also to help them build the skills they need to grow into responsibility.

Snow Shoveling Injury Prevention Tips

With snow comes the issue of snow removal. If the snow blower is on the blink or your snow removal service has not arrived and you need to travel somewhere, everyone seems to have to move some snow sometime. One full shovel can weigh as much as 25 pounds depending on the consistency of the snow. Snow shoveling sends over 11,000 children and adults to the hospital for treatment every year. Back injuries, heard injuries, fractures and heart attacks lead the list of issues treated.
