Living in the Present

This week we read the short book of Philemon, and the longer letter to the Hebrews, and, we begin James. I will save comment on James for next week.

The short little letter of Philemon is all about relationships. While in prison the Apostle Paul meets a man named Onesimus who is a runaway slave and a thief who stole from his master. Paul converts him and sends him back to his master with this letter.

Carefully consider the meaning of verse 16. It has important implications for us and the way we receive others. The message is clear, God's purpose is to absorb everyone into community, even those who have made life messy for us; especially those!

The first question worth wrestling with when reading Hebrews is, "what is it?" On the one hand, it is classified as a letter, though there are no identifying marks affirming that. There is no salutation, no greeting, and no identified sender or recipient. And, on the other hand, passages like 2:1, 5:11 and 13:22a all suggest that Hebrews is a sermon. You will have to decide for yourself.

Another question worth considering is to whom this book is addressed. Who exactly are the Hebrews? The general assumption is that they are the Jews, but that is unlikely given the content. Could they be new converts? Inexperienced Christians? Former pagans? It is unclear. One thing, however is certain, this book is addressed to those who need encouragement -- which is a lovely thing, because who among us doesn't need some of that?! Hebrews is for anyone who is dreading tomorrow while yearning for yesterday. Hebrews is a call to live in the present.
Facebook Question

Of all the books of the Bible, Hebrews is one to which I have yet to devote an Bible Study series. Now that you have almost completed reading the entire Bible, which book are you interested in studying more in-depth?

Weekly Encouragement

We are well into the season of Advent; a season of waiting, expectation, anticipation, comfort and hope. Consider changing up your reading routine if you need a little motivation. Turn on the Christmas lights and read near your tree. Or, light a candle and invite God to help you slow down and resist the temptation to be busy this season. Whatever you do, be certain to give thanks for what has most likely become a new discipline for you!
