Letters from Prison

It is hard not to feel as though we are sailing through the New Testament in record pace when we cover three (or more!) books in just one week. Often, those who were eager to hurry through the Old Testament, begin to beg to slow down so as to savor the richness of the New! I get it. I feel the same tension myself.

The words of these letters are familiar and tender and inspirational. Paul is theologically significant and nearly every word matters. Slowing down feels natural. Remember, however, it is not our goal to remember everything; the hope is that one thing each day will stir something in your heart.

The three letters we read first this week, Ephesians, Philippians, and Colossians, are commonly called the Captivity Letters; in other words, Paul wrote these letters from prison. Knowing that detail alone is a game changer in how the witness of Paul is heard.

In Ephesians pay attention to how Paul describes the church. Consider how you might draw a picture of the church as described by Paul. Here's a hint: it is unlikely that the church you draw will have a roof, walls, doors and windows. It is not a building. What does your church look like?

Unmistakable in Philippians is Paul's great joy. Remember, he writes from prison! That such statements like, "Rejoice in the Lord always; and again I say rejoice!" come from a prison cell is instructive for us today. Under what circumstances is rejoicing most difficult for you? How does Paul letter to the Philippians help?

In Colossians pay attention to the emphasis Paul places upon the supremacy of Jesus Christ and the fact that when it comes to salvation, Jesus is enough. This is an important reminder to us today in a culture that is bombarded with other gods and little sense of what enough is or even what enough looks like.

Weekly Encouragement

We are in the home stretch; just five weeks left; after Sunday, just 32 days! Our journey that began in the new year and was maintained through the seasons of winter, spring, summer, and fall; now approaches its conclusion. Make no mistake, there isomer incredible reading ahead for us; and more amazing truth from our good God. The book of Hebrews and the book of Revelation are two powerful New Testament reads. I look forward to engaging with you about your journey!
