The Texts this Weekend

This weekend is the celebration of All Saints. The readings include Revelation 21:1-6a and John 11:32-44:

When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see." Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?"

Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead for four days." Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?" So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upwards and said, "Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me." When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go."
Faith Creek Mission Success!

Our fall mission for Faith Creek was to help stock the Birthday Shelf at IOCP. Faith Creek students gave their weekly offerings, and many others also gave financial support. We also collected gifts of cake mixes, frosting and a wide variety of presents for boys and girls. With our offerings and gifts for the Birthday Shelf, we can serve close to 200 children in our community! We collected:
  • 93 gifts
  • 47 cake mixes
  • 34 frosting cans
  • numerous packages of plates, napkins, gift bags

Thank you for your support of the Birthday Shelf mission!

Thanksgiving Baskets

Share your blessings by helping provide food baskets to families in the Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis. The distribution of holiday food baskets is a ministry in partnership with Messiah Lutheran Church, our sister congregation.

Cash donations are used to purchase food. Make a notation for Messiah Thanksgiving Basket on your check to St. Philip the Deacon. A gift of $50 will purchase food for two families; any amount is greatly appreciated. The goal is to provide food baskets for 700 families. Checks may be placed in the offering plate or given to the church office.

You can also give online. Find a link to the online giving form at spdlc.org/giving.
Story Beads - Oct. 28

Spirit Beads invites you to join us for a special project making Story Beads. We'll construct a bracelet with beads that represent the stories in the Bible -- one bead for each book. This workshop is offered on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 6:30 p.m.
All Saints - Worship in the World - Nov. 1

All services this weekend will include an All Saints remembrance of those who have died during the past year.
We will also honor members of Rejoicing Partners, whose memorial and legacy gifts help ensure the future ministry of St. Philip the Deacon.

You are invited to a special outdoor worship service on All Saints Day, Nov. 1, at Lakewood Cemetery. Worship begins at 9:45 a.m. at the beautiful Reflection Pool. Worshippers will write the name or names of those they wish to remember on a white ribbon and will have the opportunity to speak the name(s) out loud if they chose. The SPD singers will provide special music for worship. A time of fellowship with something warm to drink and something sweet to eat will follow the service.

This service is open to all. It takes place in addition to the regular Sunday morning worship schedule. We will gather outdoors regardless of the weather, so please dress accordingly. The service is just under 30 minutes. You may bring a lawn chair if you would like to be seated, otherwise we stand for the whole service.

If you have questions, contact Pastor Mathison at cmathison@spdlc.org.
Augsburg Centennial Singers Concert - Nov. 1

Join us for a delightful afternoon concert by the Augsburg Centennial Singers, on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 3 p.m. The mission of the Augsburg Centennial Singers is to present concerts that personalize a Christian faith and encourage listeners to establish and deepen a relationship with Jesus Christ; and to provide fellowship for men who find joy in singing songs that have musical excellence, address the heart and reflect a variety of musical traditions. For tickets or more information, please contact Mike Walgren at michaelwalgren@comcast.net or 612-723-9819. Tickets may be ordered in advance from Mr. Walgren, or purchased at the door: Adults $10; seniors and students $8; children 12 and under free.
Faith & Life: Dr. Angelo Volandes - Nov. 5

Join us on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. to hear Dr. Angelo Volandes explore an unspoken tenet of American medicine -- keep patients alive at any price. Two-thirds of Americans die in healthcare institutions at bankrupting costs, even though research shows that most prefer to die at home in comfort, surrounded by loved ones. Dr. Volandes argues for a re-envisioning of the patient-clinician relationship and suggests new ways to ensure that patients will be in charge of their medical care. Visit the Faith & Life website for more information.
Fire of Hope - Annual Sleep Out Campaign

On the weekend of Nov. 7-8, we are committed to keeping a fire burning for 24 hours as a symbol of hope and solidarity with our neighbors who are struggling with poverty. You can participate in Fire of Hope by signing up in Fellowship Hall for a one-hour shift to keep our fire burning.

An additional fund-raising activity: on Saturday evening from 6:30-9 p.m. in the CFL, Joan Floren and Pastor VSP will be making custom earrings to benefit IOCP. Come and design earrings with us. Great Christmas presents. Donations from $10 and up.

Then, on Nov. 14-15, our High School students will be participating in IOCP's annual Sleep Out campaign. Over the course 20 years Interfaith Outreach & Community Partners has helped stabilize families experiencing homelessness through this campaign. SPD high school youth will be sleeping out to raise funds in support of this program. You can donate online to the annual Sleep Out and help us support 2,000 families in our area that need our help.

High school youth can register online to participate. Cost $10 per person.
Encounter: Black Forest Inn - Nov. 13

Martin Luther was born Nov. 10, 1483. Let's raise a toast in his honor and celebrate with a Bavarian-style dinner at the Black Forest Inn in Minneapolis. We will meet on Friday, Nov. 13 at St. Philip at 6:30 p.m. and ride a bus to dinner. $40 per person, which includes dinner, entertainment, motorcoach transportation, tax and gratuities. Register online at: spdlc.churchcenteronline.com. Questions? Please contact Cheryl Mathison or Cindy Carlson.
Book Club - Nov. 17

Join the Book Club on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. for a discussion of the book, The Reason for God: Belief in an Age of Skepticism by Timothy Keller.

In this book, Pastor Timothy Keller addresses the frequent doubts that skeptics and non-believers bring to religion. Using literature, philosophy, anthropology, pop culture, and intellectual reasoning, Keller explains how the belief in a Christian God is, in fact, a sound and rational one. Join Dr. John Schultz, St. Philip the Deacon member, superintendent of the Hopkins School District and Luther Seminary student, for an exploration of doubt and reason.
Grief Coalition Memorial Service & Dinner - Nov. 19

The West Suburban Grief Coalition invites the public to a candlelight memorial service, followed by a catered dinner, on Thursday, Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. at Messiah United Methodist, our neighboring congregation at 17805 County Road 6 in Plymouth. The memorial service helps bring comfort, hope and healing to everyone attending that have suffered the death of a loved one. Winter Jackets

We are collecting warm winter jackets for men, women and children of all sizes that will be distributed to a variety of shelters. There is a particular need for men's and women's sizes L, XL and XXL sizes. Coats can be used, however they should be clean and in good condition. Please drop them off in Fellowship Hall.
Holiday Store - Dec. 5

Once again this year we will create the opportunity for 400 children from the inner city to choose Christmas gifts for their caregivers. Shopping lists (our goal is 850 $20 gifts), drop off bins, and volunteer signup sheets will be in Fellowship Hall this weekend. Our deadline for collecting these gifts and Monday, Nov. 30.

The earth is the Lord's and all that is in it,

The world, and those who live in it;

For he has founded it on the seas, and established it on the rivers.

Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place?

Those who have clean hands and pure hearts, who do not lift up their souls to what is false, and do not swear deceitfully.

They will receive blessing from the Lord, and vindication from the God of their salvation.

Such is the company of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob.

Lift up your heads, O gates! and be lifted up, O ancient doors! that the King of glory may come in.

Who is the King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle.

Lift up your heads, O gates! and be lifted up, O ancient doors! that the King of glory may come in.

Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory.

Psalm 24

When Connecting with Kids Just Feels... Awkward

Even if you feel awkward when you think about connecting with your child, strong feelings are an opportunity to look at our core beliefs.

How to prepare for your Doctor's appointment

Make sure you know if your insurance will cover the appointment at that clinic when you make the appointment.

Bring the bottles of ALL your prescriptions and over the counter medications, vitamins and supplements with you or take photos of the bottles a to share with your doctor.

Bring copies of all recent tests or information where results of all recent tests can be obtained. Bring all information your doctor may have asked you to obtain or gather ( i.e daily blood pressures). The more current information you have the better picture your doctor can draw of your situation.

Write down when your condition first started, what makes it worse, what makes it better, how it has changed and how it has been in the last few weeks, if it is not a new condition.

Write down your questions before you see the doctor so you can accurately share them the medical team. Often we kick ourselves when we remember that important question after the doctor has moved on t the next patient. Take a photo of the effected area when the injury first occurred so the medical staff can compare it to it's present condition. Cell phones can be so helpful in documenting the process of a disease or injury.

Bring a companion with to your appointment, especially if you are getting information about treatment or a diagnosis. this way there will be a second set of ears to process and remember the information. Make sure one of you is writing down the information if your clinic does not provide you with a print out. Ask for correct spellings of diagnoses, treatments and medications.

Be on time or be early and bring something to occupy your time in case your doctor has had a setback in their schedule. When you are late you set off a domino effect making the doctor late for his subsequent appointments or they may have to shorten yours. Call if you are running late to see if the doctor can still see you.

Check in with the clinic office the week prior and find out what routine lab tests the doctor may want, where they can be drawn at so he will have access to them. Have them drawn in advance of your appointment so the results can be discussed at that appointment. Blood samples are often held for a few extra days and sometimes additional tests can be run without another blood draw.

Health and Blessings,
