The Texts this Weekend

This weekend is the celebration of the Reformation. The readings include Romans 3:19-28 and John 8:31-36:

Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, "If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, 'You will be made free'?"

Jesus answered them, "Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there for ever. So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed."
Faith Creek Fall Mission

Offerings given by our Faith Creek children this fall will go to benefit the Birthday Shelf at Interfaith Outreach and Community Partners. The Birthday Shelf offers IOCP clients the opportunity to choose a quality, new gift (at least $10-20) for their child, age 1-18 years. They also receive a gift bag and a book, as well as things they need to hold a party for their child: cake mix, frosting, napkins, paper plates, etc.

This weekend, Oct. 24-25, the children will be collecting gifts and other items to contribute directly on the Birthday Shelf. At present, IOCP reports that cake mix and frosting would be a very helpful item to bring in. Click over to our website to learn more about other gifts that you can contribute.

Be sure to join us in Fellowship Hall during coffee hours on Sunday for birthday cake!

God is our refuge and strength,

A very present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;

Though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.

God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns.

The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts.

The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

Come, behold the works of the Lord; see what desolation he has brought on the earth.

He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear;

He burns the shields with fire.

"Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth."

The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

Psalm 46
For Reflection

"I have found a desire within myself that no experience in this world can satisfy; the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world."

My Kids' Messes Drive Me CRAZY!

"I knew it was good to help my children to learn orderliness, but my energy to teach them good habits was fueled by my own feelings and beliefs. At times I interpreted every toy, dirty sock, jacket, and backpack left on the floor as a personal attack on me. I believed that everyone thought that keeping the house clean was my job, and that the kids' messes meant I was failing."

Seasonal Affective Disorder: Less Light, Less Energy

Early this month while attending the Nobel Conference at Gustavus Adolphus College, I visited the college library. I noticed therapeutic light boxes in several study carrels on each floor, along with a posting giving the symptoms of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), and advice and ways to seek help for SAD.

With the reduced sunlight during the fall and winter months biochemical changes of the brain may occur to your serotonin and melatonin levels. SAD can effect anyone, but is four times more common in females and reported most in 18-30 year-olds.

SAD Symptoms:
  • Irritability
  • Tiredness or low  energy
  • Problems getting along with other  people
  • Difficulty concentrating, thinking clearly or   decisively
  • Hypersensitivity  to rejection
  • Heavy, "leaden" feeling in the arms or legs
  • Oversleeping
  • Appetite changes, especially a craving for foods high in carbohydrates
  • Weight gain or weight  loss
It's normal to have some days when you feel down. But if you feel down for days at a time and you can't get motivated to do activities you normally enjoy, see your doctor. This is especially important if your sleep patterns and appetite have changed or if you feel hopeless, think about suicide, or turn to alcohol for comfort or relaxation.

Light therapy, a daily 30- minute exposure to a light box that simulates high-intensity sunlight, has been shown to be helpful in treating SAD -- and that is why we find them on a college  campus.

Let the sun shine in. Health and Blessings,
