The Texts this Weekend

This weekend is the 21st Sunday after Pentecost. The readings include Isaiah 53:4-12, Psalm 91:9-16, Hebrews 5:1-10 and Mark 10:35-45:

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What is it you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" They replied, "We are able." Then Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared."

When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, "You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many."
Faith Creek Fall Mission

Offerings given by our Faith Creek children this fall will go to benefit the Birthday Shelf at Interfaith Outreach and Community Partners. The Birthday Shelf offers IOCP clients the opportunity to choose a quality, new gift (at least $10-20) for their child, age 1-18 years. They also receive a gift bag and a book, as well as things they need to hold a party for their child: cake mix, frosting, napkins, paper plates, etc.

Then on the weekend of Oct. 24-25, the children will be collecting gifts and other items to contribute directly on the Birthday Shelf. At present, IOCP reports that cake mix and frosting would be a very helpful item to bring in. Click over to our website to learn more about other gifts that you can contribute.

Because you have made the Lord your refuge,

the Most High your dwelling-place,

no evil shall befall you, no scourge come near your tent.

For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.

On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.

You will tread on the lion and the adder, the young lion and the serpent you will trample under foot.

Those who love me, I will deliver; I will protect those who know my name.

When they call to me, I will answer them; I will be with them in trouble, I will rescue them and honour them.

With long life I will satisfy them, and show them my salvation.

Build Trust and Connection with 100,000 Yeses

Each "yes" is like a coin in the bank. So when you need to make a "no" withdrawal there is still plenty of trust built up. This makes it easier for kids to hear and accept the inevitable "no." When kids a question, quickly think, "Will this build our relationship? Will it draw us closer? Will it make my child feel heard and loved?"

Health Tip:

Eat Apples Abundantly

It is apple season in Minnesota! Reap the health benefits of this awesome fruit, which is a member of the rose family. Soak in some vitamin D and get a few heart pumping steps in as you pick your own apples at local orchards.

Check out these added health benefits to see why "an apple a day keeps the doctor away:"

*    Antioxidants: Quercetin, a powerful antioxidant in apples, especially in the skin, helps protect you from Alzheimer's disease by protecting your brain cells from degeneration.
*    Cardiovascular Benefits: The flavonoids, most abundant in the skin are antioxidants that help prevent heart disease. The 4 grams of soluble fiber, pectin, helps to lower LDL blood cholesterol levels that can damage arteries.
*    Blood sugar regulation: Again the soluble fiber is at work, slowing the digestion of your food and the entry of glucose into your blood stream, preventing a damaging rush of glucose into the blood.
*    Anti-Cancer: As the natural fiber ferments in the colon, it helps form chemicals that prevent cancer cell formation.

Choose organically-grown apples to decrease your exposure to the toxins of pesticides. Store apples at 35-40 degrees F. Including a moist cheese cloth with them decreases the loss of moisture and healthy chemicals. Don't store bruised or damaged apples in with healthy fresh ones, the ethylene gas released from the damaged apple decrease the normal refrigerated shelf life of 6 weeks.

Blessings and Health,
