We finish Luke's Gospel by reading the last nine chapters this week. On Thursday we will read the story of the last supper, or, first communion. Take your time with this reading. Let the events of the meal unfold slowly before you. Remember the Passover meal was traditional and therefore predictable. (Think Thanksgiving dinner.) Give consideration to what it must have been like then, when Jesus went "off script" saying: "This is my blood; This is my body." What would have gone through the minds of the disciples? How long was it before they realized that they had just participated in a meal that changed things forever?!

Be sure to read Walt Wangerin's contemplation on day 282. It raises some provoking thoughts about the sacrament.

Have your patterns for reading changed over the year? It is striking that we are now in yet another new season: autumn. Having begun our reading in the depth of winter cold, and continued through the summer heat, here we are now surrounded by the changing colors and fluctuating temperatures. Winter is on its way but summer it still holding its own. Did your favorite place to read go from a cozy place by the fireplace to a shady outdoor lawn chair? Or did you replace the warm cup of tea with a cold glass of lemonade? We are reading for a year; four seasons, twelve months; 365 days. Things are bound to change.
