The Texts this Weekend

This weekend is the 20th Sunday after Pentecost. The readings include Hebrews 4:12-16 and Mark 10:17-31:

c2008-Bill-Frymire As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, 'Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?' Jesus said to him, 'Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: "You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honour your father and mother." ' He said to him, 'Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth.' Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, 'You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.' When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions.

Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, 'How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!' And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, 'Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.' They were greatly astounded and said to one another, 'Then who can be saved?' Jesus looked at them and said, 'For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible.'

Peter began to say to him, 'Look, we have left everything and followed you.' Jesus said, 'Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age-houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields, with persecutions-and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.'

Faith Creek Fall Mission

Offerings given by our Faith Creek children through the weekend of Oct. 10-11 will go to benefit the Birthday Shelf at Interfaith Outreach and Community Partners. The Birthday Shelf offers IOCP clients the opportunity to choose a quality, new gift (at least $10-20) for their child, age 1-18 years. They also receive a gift bag and a book, as well as things they need to hold a party for their child: cake mix, frosting, napkins, paper plates, etc.

Then on the weekend of Oct. 24-25, the children will be collecting gifts and other items to contribute directly on the Birthday Shelf. At present, IOCP reports that cake mix and frosting would be a very helpful item to bring in. Click over to our website to learn more about other gifts that you can contribute.

Contact Liz Nelson if you have questions: lnelson@spdlc.org.
Book Club - Oct. 20

Join Pastor Mathison for a discussion of The Conversation: A Revolutionary Plan for End-of-Life Care by Dr. Angelo Volandes.
Dr. Angelo Volandes believes that every life lived well deserves a good ending. Through the stories of seven patients with seven very different end-of-life experiences, he shows that what people with a serious illness who are approaching their end-of-life need most, is not more medical technologies, but one simple thing: The Conversation.

Special Event - Dr. Volandes will be the Faith & Life Lecture Series speaker on Nov. 5.

We meet Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Nook. Participants can purchase a copy of the book at the SPD upper level hospitality desk ($20) or borrow it from the library in the Nook, or acquire one from a bookstore or online.

Read more about Book Club on our website.

So teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart.

Turn, O Lord! How long? Have compassion on your servants!

Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, so that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, and for as many years as we have seen evil.

Let your work be manifest to your servants, and your glorious power to their children.

Let the favour of the Lord our God be upon us, and prosper for us the work of our hands -- O prosper the work of our hands!

Psalm 90:12-17
For Reflection

Did you ever imagine discipline would be so hard?

Your children are not problems to be managed or controlled. And you aren't raising your children so they will turn out to be "well-behaved." You're raising Kingdom changers and, truly, that journey begins with YOU!.

Health Tip:

Get Your Flu Shot!

October is Here. That means: Get your flu shot!

Yes, vaccines are now available at your clinic or pharmacy. The CDC recommends flu shots for everyone 6 months and older.

It is particularly important for you and your close contacts if you are at high risk for serious flu complications. The flu vaccine is not a perfect tool, but it is the best tool that we have to protect against the flu infection.

Keep in mind it takes up to two weeks to become fully effective depending on your own body's immunity. By getting vaccinated early you will be helping to ensure as many people as possible are protected before the flu season begins. You will be helping to protect those around you who may not have as good of an immune system, if you vaccinate early. The vaccine is most effective in young healthy people.

In addition to receiving the flu vaccination take simple precautions daily, stay away from sick people and wash your hands to prevent the spread of infection. If you do become infected, please stay home from work or school to prevent others from being infected, cover your cough and again wash your hands.

For more information and exceptions, please check out the CDC web site.

Be smart.
Stay healthy,

Susan Path
