The Texts this Weekend

This weekend is the 15th Sunday after Pentecost. The readings include Isaiah 35:4-7a and Mark 7:24-37:

Then he returned from the region of Tyre, and went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. They brought to him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue. Then looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, "Ephphatha," that is, "Be opened." And immediately his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. Then Jesus ordered them to tell no one; but the more he ordered them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. They were astounded beyond measure, saying, "He has done everything well; he even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak."

Sr. High Ministry

We have been hard at work this summer identifying a new Director of High School Ministries for St. Philip the Deacon. This position is a strategic priority for the congregation, and because of that, we are committed to finding an exceptional candidate who will help us to expand this ministry in the years ahead. During this search, we have a three-fold strategy for Senior High Ministry:
  1. Our existing staff will work together to support Senior High Ministries-including Pastor Westermeyer, Pastor Schmid, Clay Thomas, Cindy Carlson, and Deb August.
  2. Four young adults with deep ties to St. Philip the Deacon will support our Senior High activities this fall: Kate Mathison, Dave Milne, Chris Paulson, and Kate Thomas. We are grateful to each of them for stepping into these roles, and excited about the energy and enthusiasm they will bring to them.
  3. We are inviting our Senior High students -- and particularly our upperclassmen -- to become more active leaders for the ministry, and have already been meeting with them to discuss all of these plans.
We are genuinely excited about how this fall is shaping up for our High School students, and will continue to communicate news about our ongoing search. Please keep this ministry -- and all of the ministries of St. Philip the Deacon-in your prayers.

Stay tuned for details on our Sr. High fall kick-off event, Saturday evening, Sept. 19!

For anyone experiencing the life-altering loss of elderly parents, this book and our discussion is sure to bring comfort, and a relief that you are not alone.

We meet Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Nook. Participants can purchase a copy of the book at the SPD upper level hospitality desk ($20) or borrow it from the library in the Nook, or acquire one from a bookstore or online.

Praise the Lord!

Praise the Lord, O my soul!

I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God all my life long.

Do not put your trust in princes, in mortals, in whom there is no help.

When their breath departs, they return to the earth; on that very day their plans perish.

Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God,

who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them;

who keeps faith for ever; who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry.

The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind.

The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous.

The Lord watches over the strangers; he upholds the orphan and the widow, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.

The Lord will reign for ever, your God, O Zion, for all generations.

Praise the Lord!

Psalm 146
For Reflection

How to Break the Cycle of Crabbiness and Negativity

Kids get crabby. Grown-ups do, too. Especially when their best efforts to help crabby kids just leads to more crabbiness.
