The Texts this Weekend

This weekend is the 14th Sunday after Pentecost. The readings include James 1:17-27 and Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23:

Now when the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around him, they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with defiled hands, that is, without washing them. (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they thoroughly wash their hands, thus observing the tradition of the elders; and they do not eat anything from the market unless they wash it; and there are also many other traditions that they observe, the washing of cups, pots, and bronze kettles.) So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?"

He said to them, "Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is written,

'This people honours me with their lips,

but their hearts are far from me;
in vain do they worship me,
teaching human precepts as doctrines.'

You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition."

Then he called the crowd again and said to them, "Listen to me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile. For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person."

Lighting Upgrade Project

The project to upgrade the sanctuary lighting system to more energy efficient LED fixtures is under way. For the duration of this project only daylight and candlelight will illuminate the sanctuary. We plan to have large-print bulletins available for services, making the worship bulletin easier to read in lower light.

We're pleased to make improvements and be good stewards of our church's resources at the same time! Many thanks to all of the families who have generously helped to underwrite this project!

Sr. High Ministry

We have been hard at work this summer identifying a new Director of High School Ministries for St. Philip the Deacon. This position is a strategic priority for the congregation, and because of that, we are committed to finding an exceptional candidate who will help us to expand this ministry in the years ahead. During this search, we have a three-fold strategy for Senior High Ministry:
  1. Our existing staff will work together to support Senior High Ministries-including Pastor Westermeyer, Pastor Schmid, Clay Thomas, Cindy Carlson, and Deb August.
  2. Four young adults with deep ties to St. Philip the Deacon will support our Senior High activities this fall: Kate Mathison, Dave Milne, Chris Paulson, and Kate Thomas. We are grateful to each of them for stepping into these roles, and excited about the energy and enthusiasm they will bring to them.
  3. We are inviting our Senior High students -- and particularly our upperclassmen -- to become more active leaders for the ministry, and have already been meeting with them to discuss all of these plans.
We are genuinely excited about how this fall is shaping up for our High School students, and will continue to communicate news about our ongoing search. Please keep this ministry -- and all of the ministries of St. Philip the Deacon-in your prayers.
The Conversation - Sept. 8

Whether you're retired, semi-retired or just find yourself free on Sept. 8 from 1-2:30 p.m., join us for The Conversation. There will be good food, conversation and laughter. Reservations are not needed.

Our guest this month will be Susan Path, St. Philip the Deacon's new Parish Nurse!
Book Club - Sept. 15

Join Pastor Mathison for a discussion of Roz Chast's memoir, Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant, as she brings her wit to the topic of aging parents. Spanning the last several years of their lives and told through four-color cartoons, family photos, and documents, Can't We Talk is as full of laughs as it is with tears. For anyone experiencing the life-altering loss of elderly parents, this book and our discussion is sure to bring comfort, and a relief that you are not alone.

We meet Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Nook. Participants can purchase a copy of the book at the SPD upper level hospitality desk ($20) or borrow it from the library in the Nook, or acquire one from a bookstore or online.

Read more about Book Club on our website.

O Lord, who may abide in your tent?

Who may dwell on your holy hill?

Those who walk blamelessly, and do what is right, and speak the truth from their heart;

Who do not slander with their tongue, and do no evil to their friends, nor take up a reproach against their neighbors;

In whose eyes the wicked are despised, but who honor those who fear the Lord;

Who stand by their oath even to their hurt;

Who do not lend money at interest, and do not take a bribe against the innocent.

Those who do these things shall never be moved.

Psalm 15

Should My Kid Get a Participation Trophy Just for Showing Up?

Perhaps participation trophies could instill an attitude of entitlement in kids; however, the other side of the equation could be an unhealthy obsession with winning at all costs and a belief that anything short of "winning" is just not good enough. Over time, this can sometimes communicate to kids that they are not good enough.
