The Texts this Weekend

This weekend is the Sixth Sunday after Pentecost. The readings include 2 Corinthians 12:2-10 and Mark 6:1-13:

He left that place and came to his home town, and his disciples followed him. On the sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They said, 'Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What deeds of power are being done by his hands! Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?' And they took offence at him. Then Jesus said to them, 'Prophets are not without honour, except in their home town, and among their own kin, and in their own house.' And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them. And he was amazed at their unbelief.

Then he went about among the villages teaching. He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. He said to them, 'Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.' So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent. They cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

Matching Grant for Messiah Summer Food Pantry

Because children are home from school during the summer, the demand on area food shelves is even greater than the rest of the year. To help address this need, members of St. Philip the Deacon have pledged to match any contributions made in June, July and August up to $5,000! To take advantage of this match, please make your check to St. Philip the Deacon and write "Messiah Food Shelf" in the memo line. To make a gift online, visit our online giving site and enter your gift under "Food Baskets: Messiah Food Shelf."
Lights Out for an Upgrade

Later in July, we will be upgrading the entire sanctuary lighting system to more energy efficient LED fixtures. The project will likely extend through one or more worship services, but we trust that our skylight will provide enough lighting for worship during the installation, even in the evenings. (The project was originally scheduled to begin this week, but has been delayed slightly due to a technical issue with the lift our contractor will be using to reach the Sanctuary ceilings.)

This renovation will save the congregation significant resources both in energy consumption and in maintenance costs for bulb replacement (which always requires us to rent special equipment, given the ceiling height). We also hope that worshipers will notice better lighting in the sanctuary once the project is completed. It's nice to be able to make improvements and be good stewards of our church's resources! Many thanks to all of the families who have generously helped to underwrite this project! If you would like to make a contribution to help support this renovation, please contact Pastor Tim Westermeyer or Finance Administrator Cheryl Sjaarda.
Donate Black Dress Shoes - Keep Them Coming!

We are so excited about our growing collection of black dress shoes for school children in Haiti! Thanks to you, we have collected well over 200 pairs of school shoes so far, and with a good assortment of sizes. We still have about a week to go with this project, so keep those shoes coming! Monetary gifts are also welcome. Through July 12, bring your donations to the Hospitality Desk in the Atrium or to the church office.

You can also help with this project on Wednesday, July 8 as we begin to sort and pack shoes. Sign up for the morning crew, 9-11 a.m., or the afternoon crew, 1-3 p.m. Contact Cindy Carlson at ccarlson@spdlc.org or 763-475-7115. To learn more about this wonderful project, visit our website.

To you I lift up my eyes,

O you who are enthroned in the heavens!

As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master,

As the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress,

So our eyes look to the Lord our God, until he has mercy upon us.

Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of contempt.

Our soul has had more than its fill of the scorn of those who are at ease, of the contempt of the proud.

Psalm 123

For Reflection

"In the true nature of things, every green tree is far more glorious than if it were made of gold and silver."

- Martin Luther

What to Do When Kids Go Crazy? Do a Do-Over!

Sometimes it can seem like the simplest interactions are the ones that explode out of nowhere. Getting out the door to school, getting in the car to go somewhere, getting ready for bed - when it comes to transition time, you can just feel your blood pressure begin to rise. So what do you do when an interaction with kids goes haywire? Do a do-over!
