We enter the book of Ecclesiastes on Thursday. Sometimes I think reading Ecclesiastes is a bit like engaging in a detox for life; as the writer empties his heart pouring out his profound disappointment with the futility of life, the reader is invited to give voice to his/her own frustrations regarding meaning and purpose. I think it is in the emptying that we, the readers, along with the writer, are renewed for a new day.

Martin Luther describes the focus of Ecclesiastes this way:

Might it be, that once emptied, our otherwise occupied minds, are free to rest in the care of our Lord, who has promised to provide for, to preserve, and to protect us for all of our days. It is then, that we can say with conviction: Rejoice and be glad! (Ecclesiastes 3:12)
