Welcome to Proverbs! The Contemplation on page 724 of the NRSV Daily Bible begins: "Much of Proverbs invites the reader into a contemplative pace of living." What a lovely invitation into a wonderful book of the Bible for a busy people like us! So often life feels like we stepped onto a treadmill set to a pace we cannot sustain for more than a few steps. But Proverbs encourages us to slow down, step off the treadmill, and be attentive to our lifestyles. It calls us into the present. It paints a picture of living well and draws us into it. Reading the proverbs is like a lesson in becoming skilled for all of life: as parents, as children, as friends and neighbors, as leaders, as coworkers, and most importantly, as children of God.
