The Texts this Weekend

This weekend is the Fifth Sunday of Easter. Readings include Acts 8:26-40, and John 15:1-8:

I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine-grower. He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.

Nepal Earthquake Relief

An extremely powerful earthquake struck Nepal on April 25, causing massive damage to buildings and infrastructure. Tremors were felt across northern India and neighboring Bangladesh and Pakistan. Thousands have been injured or killed, and many more displaced. Please pray for those affected by the earthquake in Nepal and for all who are working to respond to the disaster.

You can donate to Lutheran Disaster Response by phone at 800-638-3522, online at Lutheran Disaster Response Nepal, or by mail:
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
ELCA Gift Processing Center
P.O. Box 1809
Merrifield, VA 22116-8009
Please write "Nepal Earthquake Fund" on the memo line of your check.

You can also donate to Lutheran Disaster Response through SPD. Your check, payable to SPD with "Nepal Earthquake" on the memo line, can be placed in the offering plate, and we will forward your gift. When you donate to Lutheran Disaster Response, you can rest assured your dollars are used wisely.
Support Redeemer - Text to Vote!

Here's a fun, easy way you can participate in our local mission and ministry:

Thrivent Financial is splitting $20,000 in charitable grant funds between Redeemer Lutheran Church (our mission partner in north Minneapolis) and three other local nonprofits. In this fun social media campaign, you can vote with the text messaging service on your smartphone! The distribution of the $20,000 is based on the percentage of votes received, so your vote is important. Texting your vote is easy:
  1. Create a text message and enter 86677 after the "To:" prompt.
  2. Type "RYouth" in the message creation area.
  3. Press "Send." You will receive a text message confirming your vote.
Spread the word! Tell your friends and family, so they can get in on the voting too! Voting runs through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, 2015. (This is not an opt-in list. You will not receive any other text messages or phone calls from Thrivent's Share the Vote program. Only one vote per phone number will be recorded. Standard text messaging rates apply.)

Thank you for your participation!
Congratulations, Honor Choir Participants!

Congratulations to three of our SPD choir members who will be participating in the ACDA of Minnesota Children's Honor Choirs this weekend! We will comission the Soul Sisterhood's new camper van, "Ruthie," for mission and ministry as we expand our outreach for Summer 2015 with Little Sister and Wayfarer Day Camps. Join the celebration Sunday, May 17 at 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome!
Book Club - May 19

Book Club meet on Tuesday, May 19 at 7 p.m. to discuss the book "7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess" by Jen Hatmaker. "7" is the true story of how Jen (along with her husband and her children to varying degrees) took seven months, identified seven areas of excess, and made seven simple choices to fight back against the modern-day diseases of greed, materialism, and overindulgence. Food. Clothes. Spending. Media. Possessions. Waste. Stress. They spent thirty days on each topic. Please join us for what promises to be a lively dicussion. Books are available at local bookstores and on Amazon.

Since this is our last book club of the season, please come with the title of a book or two you would like to see on the list for next year. For more information contact Pastor Mathison at cmathison@spdlc.org.

From you comes my praise in the great congregation

My vows I will pay before those who fear him.

The poor shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord. May your hearts live for ever!

All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord;

And all the families of the nations shall worship before him.

For dominion belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations.

To him, indeed, shall all who sleep in the earth bow down; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, and I shall live for him.

Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord,

And proclaim his deliverance to a people yet unborn, saying that he has done it.

Psalm 22:25-31
