In Context

By week's end, we will be just five chapters short of having completed the second book of the Bible. And in between now and then are some of the most powerful and familiar Old Testament stories of all. We read of the crossing of the Red Sea, the arrival at Mount Sinai, the establishment of a covenant at Sinai and the giving of the Ten Commandments, and the construction of the Ark of the Covenant and the Tabernacle.

A careful read of these familiar narratives reveals remarkable insight into the design of our worship centers as well as the structure of our liturgy. Amazing. These events of which we read this week occurred around some 2500 years ago and yet they continue to inform, inspire, and stir our imaginations.

Facebook Question

In the Dec. 8, 2014 edition of the Washington Post there was an article titled: No, really, there is a scientific explanation for the parting of the Red Sea in Exodus.

How do you react to the suggestion that it was a "weather event"? Does it matter?

Weekly Encouragement

It can be challenging to read the lengthy sections of the Bible devoted to a detailed explanation behind the construction of the tabernacle. Remember to read with your ears wide open. This is a listening exercise; you are not studying for a test. What is God saying to you today?

Find a Bible

Most participants will be using The NRSV Daily Bible published by Harper Books. This Bible is divided into 365 daily readings -- each one a brief 20-minute read -- followed by a prayer and brief meditation.
  • Copies of The NRSV Daily Bible are available for purchase from the church for $20 at the hospitality desk in the Atrium.
  • Three copies of The NRSV Daily Bible are in the Nook for use in that space. Please do not remove them from the Nook.
  • Mobile editions of The NRSV Daily Bible are available for mobile reading devices like the Amazon Kindle.
  • You could, of course, read a Bible that you already have on hand. You just won't get the meditations and prayers.
