We begin the book of Deuteronomy, the fifth book of the Pentateuch, this week. It contains the final words of Moses, spoken as he stands on the East Bank of the River Jordan and prepares the people he had led there to cross over the water into the Promised Land. It is the final step of the journey begun by Abraham so many centuries before.

But it is a step that Moses himself will not take. He is not permitted to cross. So his words are preparatory in nature and filled with heart and passion; not unlike a parent's words to a son or daughter as they leave home. One could nearly summarize this book with three simple words: Remember. Don't forget. The centerpiece of our reading for this week may very well be Deuteronomy 6:4-12.
