This Weekend

This weekend is the Fourth Sunday after Epiphany. The readings will include 1 Corinthians 8:1-13 and Mark 1:21-28:

They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, 'What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.' But Jesus rebuked him, saying, 'Be silent, and come out of him!' And the unclean spirit, throwing him into convulsions and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, 'What is this? A new teaching -- with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.' At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.

Be a Hero - Save Lives - Give Blood - Jan. 28

You or someone you know will need blood. If not personally in need, at some point we will all know a friend, neighbor, family member, or co-worker who needs a blood transfusion. In fact, 1 out of 3 people will need blood in their lifetime. From natural disasters to unforeseen catastrophes, emergency hospital procedures to life-long battles with chronic diseases such as sickle cell, the need for blood is constant. The supply is not. And since there is no substitute, only volunteer blood donors can roll up their sleeves and save lives.

Blood types O- and B- are especially needed at this time.

St. Philip the Deacon is hosting a blood drive TODAY, Jan. 28 from 3-6:30 p.m. Will you be one of the heroes who will save someone's life? You may just drop in and donate. Thank you!

Souper Bowl of Caring - Jan. 31-Feb. 2

Since it began in 1990, the Souper Bowl of Caring, held on Super Bowl weekend, has generated more than $100 million for food banks. SPD has been involved for the last 15 years, with our donations helping the Kasambala Medical Center in Malawi, Africa feed AIDS orphans. Our friend at Kasambala, Dr. Trywell Nyirongo, writes,

"This year's rains have brought havoc to the country. As I write now we lost over 200 lives due to floods in the country. Crops have been washed away throughout the country. Many people are left homeless with no food. In our area we have been spared in flood victims but we desperately need food supplements for the children and the elderly in the community we serve.

I am just hoping that our friends through the Souper Bowl of Caring can once again kindly assist us in this dilemma. We also need drugs as usual and food supplies for our medical center as patients and helpless people come to us in the community."

Donations for the Souper Bowl of Caring will be collected in the narthex in the soup kettles the weekend of Jan. 31 - Feb. 2. This is also a great weekend to bring a can of soup for Messiah Food Shelf. Our thanks to the Sunday morning Sojourner's confirmation students and scouts, who will receive your donations.

Women's Retreat 2015 - March 6-8

All of us experience deeply personal periods of life that connect with the distinct seasons of Jesus' life, death, resurrection, waiting, ascension, and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. These have the power to move us toward the kind of life we long for -- with new joy, transformation, and deep well-being in our personal lives and ministry. The 2015 Women's Retreat, Seasons of the Soul, unpacks the special rhythms of Jesus' life and passion that offer transformation to ours. It helps us recognize and embrace these rhythms toward resurrected power and meaning in our personal lives and ministries.

Join us the weekend of March 6-8 for this powerful faith-building retreat. Read more on our website and download the registration form. Registration deadline is March 1, so don't delay!

Praise the Lord!

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation.

Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them.

Full of honor and majesty is his work, and his righteousness endures for ever.

He has gained renown by his wonderful deeds; the Lord is gracious and merciful.

He provides food for those who fear him; he is ever mindful of his covenant.

He has shown his people the power of his works, in giving them the heritage of the nations.

The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy.

They are established for ever and ever, to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness.

He sent redemption to his people; he has commanded his covenant for ever.

Holy and awesome is his name.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding.

His praise endures for ever.

Psalm 111

For Reflection

"If I could prescribe only one remedy for all the ills of the modern world, I would prescribe silence."

- Soren Kierkegaard

Faithful Parenting

When it's good for kids to say, "No."

We talked frequently about how to decide if another person's stated need was manipulative or legitimate. Over time the kids learned that they can love and serve people without being manipulated. As young adults they have both strong and respectful relational boundaries.
