In Context

A pillar of cloud by day
and a pillar of fire by night.
This week we finish another book and begin the next. With the laws and rituals of Leviticus behind us, the census report in the opening chapters of Numbers might read like a breath of fresh air! Well, maybe.

Quickly the reader will discover that in Numbers there is so much depth to explore. As God's people venture out and away from Mount Sinai (Numbers 10) and head toward the land promised to Abraham, it is evident how messy life can be. They wrestle with getting organized and keeping order and getting along with one another and listening to God.

Often the time in the wilderness is characterized as "wandering," as though God's people were misguided, lost, and left alone to themselves in a barren land. Read Numbers for what it is and you will discover that is not true at all. God's people were led by God through the wilderness. Led by God! through the wilderness. What comfort that provides!

Facebook Question

At the end of Numbers 6 is the benediction that we use in worship today. Now that you have read these words in their original context, how do you hear the Benediction of today differently?

Weekly Encouragement

Are you feeling as though you are drowning? Too much reading? Can't keep track of the narrative? Overwhelmed?

It's ok. If this is your first time reading the Bible or your fiftieth time, it is natural to feel these things. Remember, you are not reading for a test; it is not your task to remember and understand everything you are reading.

Listen for God. The voice of God is speaking to you today through the words of your ancestors. You are reading your story! Relax. Enjoy.
