And here comes Leviticus!

This is the book that has successfully stopped many from completing their goal of reading of the entire Bible. It is a book of laws and rituals and regulations -- lots of them. Like, 613 of them. The list of laws may leave you wondering how they matter today. But I will not make excuses for this book, or apologize for it. Leviticus is absolutely important and necessary and worthy of our time and attention.

Be sure to read the introduction to Leviticus from the NRSV Daily Bible on Day 27 of this week. It might help to remember that throughout Leviticus the author is pointing to the holiness of our God.

Eugene Peterson, in The Message, describes Leviticus like this: "a detailed and meticulous preparation for living 'holy' in a culture that doesn't have the faintest idea what 'holy' is." Hmmm. How might that speak to our culture today?
