Slaves in Egypt

This week we learn how it is that God's people end up living in Egypt.

We begin with the Joseph narrative and it contains what is one of the most beautiful accounts of forgiveness and reconciliation anywhere. Pause after you read Genesis 45 and give prayerful consideration to your relationships.

We complete the first of the 66 books of the Bible on Day 15. Between the end of Genesis and the beginning of Exodus some 400 years pass. And then we learn: "a new king who did not know Joseph arose over Egypt." God's people go from a position of privilege in this foreign land to being slaves.

We meet Moses on Day 16 and we end the week with the story of the ten plagues. The battle between God and Pharaoh fascinates and frustrates. On the one hand we see the power of God and on the other we can't help but wonder about the hardening of hearts.

Facebook Question

Each week I will ask a question to jumpstart a Facebook discussion. If you haven't already, please join the "SPD One Year Bible Read Along" group and take part in the conversation!

How is reading devotionally going for you? What have you noticed is different from reading for information?

Weekly Encouragement

Did you know that in establishing any new discipline, statistics show that it can take as few as 21 days? Twenty-one. You are almost there. How about that!

Join the Group
We are members and friends of St. Philip the Deacon Lutheran Church in Plymouth, Minnesota, reading the entire Bible together throughout the year 2015.
Find a Bible

Most participants will be using The NRSV Daily Bible published by Harper Books. This Bible is divided into 365 daily readings -- each one a brief 20-minute read -- followed by a prayer and brief meditation.
  • Copies of The NRSV Daily Bible are available for purchase from the church for $20 at the hospitality desk in the Atrium.
  • Three copies of The NRSV Daily Bible are in the Nook for use in that space. Please do not remove them from the Nook.
  • Mobile editions of The NRSV Daily Bible are available for mobile reading devices like the Amazon Kindle.
  • You could, of course, read a Bible that you already have on hand. You just won't get the meditations and prayers.
