This Weekend

This weekend is the 19th Sunday after Pentecost. The readings include

Thessalonians 1:1-10 and Matthew 22:15-22.

Then the Pharisees went and plotted to entrap him in what he said. So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, 'Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?' But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, 'Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin used for the tax.' And they brought him a denarius. Then he said to them, 'Whose head is this, and whose title?' They answered, 'The emperor's.' Then he said to them, 'Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor's, and to God the things that are God's.' When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away.

O sing to the Lord a new song;

Sing to the Lord, all the earth.

Sing to the Lord, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day.

Declare his glory among the nations, his marvellous works among all the peoples.

For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; he is to be revered above all gods.

For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the Lord made the heavens.

Honour and majesty are before him; strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.

Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering, and come into his courts.

Worship the Lord in holy splendour; tremble before him, all the earth.

Say among the nations, 'The Lord is king! The world is firmly established; it shall never be moved.

He will judge the peoples with equity.'

Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it;

Let the field exult, and everything in it.

Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord; for he is coming, for he is coming to judge the earth.

He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with his truth.

Psalm 96

For Reflection

"I do not at all understand the mystery of grace -- only that it meets us where we are but does not leave us where it found us."

- Anne Lamott

Faithful Parenting

When Kids Are Defiant

When kids say "No!" parents tend to react rather than respond. Reacting tends to lead to unconstructive power struggles that follow this basic pattern: Child: "No!" Parent: "Yes!" Child: "No!" Parent: "Yes or else!" Child: "I don't care!" Parent: "Well I'll show you who's boss!"
