This Weekend

This weekend is the 9th Sunday after Pentecost. The readings include

Psalm 145:8-9, 14-21 and Matthew 14:22-33.

Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. And early in the morning he came walking towards them on the lake. But when the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified, saying, 'It is a ghost!' And they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, 'Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.'

Peter answered him, 'Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.' He said, 'Come.' So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came towards Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, 'Lord, save me!' Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, 'You of little faith, why did you doubt?' When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshipped him, saying, 'Truly you are the Son of God.'

We also want to hear about where your college student is attending! Please tell us the name of the college or university, and where it's located.

New Piano

The piano in the Choir Room, which has been on loan to the church, is returning to its original home. We've negotiated the purchase of a used Yamaha C7 Concert Grand -- the same kind we have in the Sanctuary. We believe it is important to invest in instruments like this to support our outstanding music ministry, and -- while we believe we are getting a very good deal on this instrument -- pianos like this are never inexpensive. We are therefore inviting contributions to support its purchase.

If you would like to help offset the cost of this piano, please visit our designated contributions page, or send a check to the church and indicate "Piano" on the memo line. Thank you for generously supporting the music ministry of St. Philip the Deacon!

The Lord is gracious and merciful,

slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

The Lord is good to all,

and his compassion is over all that he has made. The Lord upholds all who are falling, and raises up all who are bowed down.

The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food in due season.

You open your hand, satisfying the desire of every living thing.

The Lord is just in all his ways, and kind in all his doings.

The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.

He fulfils the desire of all who fear him; he also hears their cry, and saves them.

The Lord watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy.

My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord, and all flesh will bless his holy name for ever and ever.

- Psalm 1196

For Reflection

"My God, I pray better to You by breathing. I pray better to You by walking than by talking."

- Thomas Merton

How to help your shy child bloom

Parents usually love when their kids are outgoing and gregarious. But when kids clam up parents tend to get a bit anxious themselves and make the proclamation (or maybe more the apology) "Oh, he's just a shy one." The "shy" label may be somewhat accurate, but it does nothing to honor the child or help him become more confident about who he is.
