This Weekend - Pentecost 8

This weekend is the 8th Sunday after Pentecost. The readings include Psalm 145:8-9, 14-21 and Matthew 14:13-21

Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick.

When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, 'This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.' Jesus said to them, 'They need not go away; you give them something to eat.' They replied, 'We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.' And he said, 'Bring them here to me.' Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Pictorial Directory

This summer we begin work on a new pictorial directory of our faith community. We will be taking family photos beginning in late July through September.

If you consider St. Philip the Deacon your faith community, we encourage you to be a part of the pictorial directory.

Make your appointment online today! There is no cost to you, unless you decide to purchase additional portraits. Each family who has their picture taken will receive a free 8x10 color portrait. Contact Cindy Carlson for more information.

Be a Directory Host! Each of the photography sessions will need a volunteer to serve as a host, to greet and check in people. Typically a 2-3 hour commitment. Contact Cindy Carlson to schedule a time to serve as a host.

What's Your School?

We have collected quite a list so far, including all of the Wayzata elementary and middle schools and Wayzata High School. If you attend a school not in the Wayzata District, please let us know the name of school, school district and what grade your student is in; or tell us your college or university, and where it's located. Email Cindy Carlson.

  • Markers and crayons

  • Calculators
  • Flash drives
  • Highlighters
  • 3-ring binders

New Piano

The piano in the Choir Room, which has been on loan to the church, is returning to its original home. We've negotiated the purchase of a used Yamaha C7 Concert Grand -- the same kind we have in the Sanctuary. We believe it is important to invest in instruments like this to support our outstanding music ministry, and -- while we believe we are getting a very good deal on this instrument -- pianos like this are never inexpensive. We are therefore inviting contributions to support its purchase.

If you would like to help offset the cost of this piano, please visit our designated contributions page, or send a check to the church and indicate "Piano" on the memo line. Thank you for generously supporting the music ministry of St. Philip the Deacon!
Altar Flowers

Whether celebrating a milestone, special event or remembering a loved one you are invited to sponsor the Altar Flowers. The arrangements are $60 each, and are available to pick up on Tuesday mornings. There are still dates available this summer and fall. To make arrangements please contact the church office at 763-475-7100.
Messiah Lutheran Calls New Pastor

Messiah Lutheran Church, our sister congregation in the Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis, is happy to announce that a call has been issued to Louise Britts to become the Pastor at Messiah. She will be installed on September 28th, 2014. We rejoice with Messiah and Pastor Britts.
If you have questions about anything you've read here, or want to know more about St. Philip the Deacon and its ministries, please contact us at info@spdlc.org or 763-475-7100.

The Lord is gracious and merciful,

slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

The Lord is good to all, and his compassion is over all that he has made.

The Lord upholds all who are falling, and raises up all who are bowed down.

The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food in due season.

You open your hand, satisfying the desire of every living thing.

The Lord is just in all his ways, and kind in all his doings.

The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.

He fulfils the desire of all who fear him; he also hears their cry, and saves them.

The Lord watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy.

My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord, and all flesh will bless his holy name for ever and ever.

- Psalm 119:129-136

Mercy in the Midst of Our Struggle

"Can't you just get in the bathtub without arguing?!!" Daniel and I were nose-to-nose in a typical power struggle. I knew it was going to take most of my intellectual and emotional savvy just to get this grimy little kid in the tub.
