To many, Memorial Day is the unofficial beginning of summer. However, the true reason for Memorial Day was to honor the memory of the men and women who died fighting in the United States armed forces.
Memorial Day is typically observed by placing flags and flowers on graves and tossing flowers in the water to honor those who died at sea.
Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting
in any war).
We wish everyone a great holiday weekend.

......Meets the Sky

Memorial Day is a day for remembering and every year on Memorial Day, something truly beautiful takes place in Hawaii. At sunset, thousands of paper lanterns are released into the

ocean in memory of loved ones who have passed. "Where the Ocean Meets the Sky" is a documentary that explores this annual ritual of Lantern Floating.

Rock Hall Cruise Night by Smilin' Jake's
|
That's right, it's that time of the year!
Have a classic car, street rod or good old muscle car? Then bring it out to our cruise nights and show it off. What better way to spend a Friday night in the summer than the way we did back in the 60's. There will be oldies spinnin', plenty of fun and food from 5:30 til' 8:30. Check the schedule and we'll see you on Main Street in Rock Hall. Say.... don't have a ride, then just come on by and check out those that have come.

Memorial Day In Hawaii
Every year on Memorial Day fifty thousand fresh flower leis are donated and placed on the graves of veterans at the National Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu and at other
veterans' cemeteries on Oahu and outer islands. The general public is invited to donate leis made of ti leaves or fresh flowers only that measure 20 to 24 inches before tying, and the leis must be tied. The leis are usually needed by the Friday before Memorial Day.
